Chapter 12 - The Ghost from the Past

The sudden appearance of the rope ladder dangling from the ruptured overhead ventilation shaft threw Sterling’s tactical team into instant confusion. Shouts echoed off the damp brick walls as the armed guards raised their weapons toward the dark opening, frantically sweeping their tactical lights across the ceiling.

"Hold your fire! Do not shoot!" Sterling barked sharply, his calm composure fracturing for the first time as he realized an unknown variable had just infiltrated their secure perimeter.

Julian didn't hesitate for a single microsecond. He scooped Clara up into his free arm, securing the sleeping infant tightly against his chest with his other hand, and leaped toward the dangling rope.

"Clara, grab hold of my neck as hard as you can!" Julian commanded fiercely.

The little girl wrapped her arms around his shoulders with the desperate strength of someone fighting for her very life. Julian caught the sturdy hemp rungs with one hand, his powerful back muscles straining violently as he hoisted himself and the children upward into the dark ventilation shaft just as the first tactical rifle barked a deafening warning shot into the concrete floor below us.

"Get them down! Pull them back!" Sterling screamed, lunging forward with his arm outstretched, but his fingers grazed only empty air inches below Julian’s boots.

As Julian hauled himself and the children through the narrow metal opening into the upper duct network, a rough, calloused hand reached out from the darkness, grabbing his collar and hauling them all backward into the safety of an abandoned control room.

"Welcome back to the underground, little brother," a deep, gravelly voice murmured from the shadows.

Julian blinked rapidly against the dim, amber glow of a single overhead work light. Standing before him was a man with a rugged, unshaven face, wearing a worn leather jacket and carrying a heavy tactical pack. A faint crescent-shaped birthmark, identical to Julian’s own, was clearly visible just behind his left ear.

"Thomas?" Julian breathed out in absolute, paralyzed shock, staring directly into the face of the brother who had supposedly died in a fiery yacht accident six years ago.

Thomas Vance let out a tired, dry chuckle, tossing a heavy wrench onto a metal workbench with a loud clatter. "Sorry about missing the wedding, Julian. Looks like I saved you from a terrible divorce, though."

Clara burst into fresh tears, scrambling out of Julian’s arms and throwing herself directly against Thomas’s waist. "Daddy! You came back! Grandfather's bad men tried to take baby Leo!"

Thomas wrapped his arms tightly around his daughter, burying his face in her long light brown hair while his eyes remained fixed on Julian, filled with a heavy, sorrowful gravity.

"I never left, Julian," Thomas said softly, gently rocking Clara back and forth. "I've been watching from the shadows the entire time, waiting for the exact moment the old man’s empire finally started to rot from the inside out."
