Chapter 5 - The Chairman's Shadow

Marcus’s threat hung in the electrified air of the ballroom, causing several society matrons in the front pews to stifle terrified gasps. The polished marble floor beneath Julian’s shoes suddenly felt like thin ice over a freezing lake. He knew the absolute reach of his grandfather’s power; Arthur Vance had built his multi-billion-dollar empire on broken contracts, ruined rivals, and bodies buried deep in corporate red tape. If Marcus had orders to seize the infant, local law enforcement wouldn't dare intervene, and the press would be conveniently managed before dawn.
"You don't have jurisdiction here, Marcus," Julian stated coldly, planting his feet firmly on the aisle floor. "This is my wedding venue, and these children are under my direct protection."
"Protection?" Marcus let out a harsh, humorless laugh that echoed off the crystal chandeliers. "Mr. Vance, the chairman is ninety-two years old and his heart is failing fast. The board of directors has been informed that you died heirless in that yacht accident six years ago, just like your brother Thomas. If this infant is proven to be Thomas's legitimate firstborn son, your entire corporate succession plan collapses instantly. The old man isn't going to let a dead man's bastard steal the throne."
The revelation hit the gathered elites like a physical shockwave. Gasps and murmurs erupted from every corner of the room. Evelyn froze, her face draining of color as the horrific mathematics of the situation finally registered in her ambitious mind.
"Thomas's child?" Evelyn whispered in sheer horror, her eyes snapping toward Clara and the infant in the pink blanket. "That means... that means Julian isn't the sole heir to the Vance fortune after all. And if this baby is legitimate, our prenuptial trust is worth absolute garbage!"
"Keep your voice down, Evelyn," Richard Sinclair hissed, grabbing his daughter’s arm and pulling her back toward the altar. "This is a catastrophe. Julian, you cannot let these thugs take them, but you also can't afford to validate a claim that cuts us out of the holding company!"
Julian ignored them completely. His mind was racing through a labyrinth of old memories and buried secrets. Six years ago, his younger brother Thomas had vanished under mysterious circumstances after openly defying their grandfather's ruthless business practices. At the time, Arthur Vance had declared Thomas dead and locked down the family trust. Julian had spent years playing the obedient corporate soldier just to keep the empire intact, believing he was the last of his line.
"Clara," Julian said quietly, turning his back on Marcus for a crucial second to look down at the trembling little girl. "Listen to me very carefully. Do you trust me?"
Clara looked up through her tear-stained lashes, her small chest heaving as she clutched the silver pendant tightly in her fist. "Mom said your heart was good, even if grandfather's was made of stone. She said you would protect baby Leo."

"Mr. Vance, I’m giving you one final warning," Marcus barked, closing the distance until he was standing just ten feet away, his hand subtly dropping toward his jacket holster. "Hand over the girl and the baby, or we take them through you."
