Chapter 11 - The Viper's Trap

The damp air in the underground service tunnel grew suffocatingly heavy as the fixer—a man known in elite circles simply as Vance’s legal hatchet man, Mr. Sterling—slowly advanced down the concrete corridor. His polished leather shoes clicked rhythmically against the wet floor, completely unbothered by the filth surrounding them.
"Step aside, Julian," Sterling repeated, his voice smooth and devoid of any human warmth. "The chairman's patience has finally run out. You've played the rebellious grandson for six years, but this little theatrical stunt at your own wedding has gone far enough."
Richard Sinclair quickly recovered his composure, stepping eagerly into Sterling’s path with an obsequious smile plastered across his face. "Mr. Sterling! Thank goodness you're here. This entire disaster is completely outside our prenuptial agreement. My daughter was publicly humiliated, and this lunatic—” he jabbed a finger toward Julian—“has brought vagrants and stolen property into a multi-million-dollar ceremony. Vance Enterprises must compensate us immediately for the damages!"
Sterling didn't even glance at Richard. He simply raised a single, perfectly manicured hand, and two armed operatives instantly stepped forward, bodily shoving the industrial tycoon backward into the damp brick wall with a dull thud.
"Mr. Sinclair, your financial grievances are entirely irrelevant to the chairman," Sterling said coldly, his eyes fixed dead ahead on Julian. "The Vance dynasty does not negotiate with collateral damage."
Evelyn gasped in absolute horror, clutching her ruined, buttercream-stained bridal gown as reality finally crashed down upon her. "Father! They... they don't care about us at all!"
Julian didn't blink. He gently shifted the sleeping infant deeper into the safety of his shirt and took a half-step backward, placing his body squarely between Sterling’s operatives and Clara.
"You want the children, Sterling?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal register. "You'll have to step over my corpse to get them."
"A noble sentiment, Julian, but entirely futile," Sterling replied calmly, signaling the four armed guards to raise their tactical weapons. "You think you can fight your way out of the city with a newborn baby and a terrified child? The airspace is locked, the highways are under our control, and your grandfather is currently rewriting the corporate charter to dissolve your entire division."
Clara whimpered softly, burying her face into Julian’s damp shirt while clutching the silver family crest pendant so tightly that her small knuckles turned completely white.
"Don't let them take us, Daddy," Clara sobbed quietly, her small frame shaking uncontrollably.
Julian’s jaw tightened until the bone threatened to fracture. He scanned the dark, dripping walls of the tunnel, searching desperately for any hidden utility hatch or forgotten service ladder. That was when a sudden, low rumble vibrated through the concrete beneath their feet—a sound not of a train or a car, but of heavy machinery grinding to a halt directly above the utility sector.
Sterling frowned, glancing upward toward the ceiling just as a heavy cloud of masonry dust suddenly billowed down from an overhead ventilation shaft.
"What is that?" Sterling muttered, raising a hand to wave away the dust.
Before anyone could react, the metal grating of the overhead vent blew outward with an explosive crash, scattering jagged pieces of iron across the floor. A rope ladder dropped swiftly from the opening, and a rough, weathered voice echoed down from the darkness above.

"Grab the ladder, Julian! Move, move, move!"
