Chapter 9 - The Lightning Strike

A deafening crack of thunder shook the cliffside as the transformer exploded in a cascade of blinding blue sparks. The sudden darkness was absolute, broken only by the erratic strobe of electrical fires licking down the side of the stone tower.

In that split second of utter chaos, the man holding Maya stumbled backward, momentarily blinded by the flash.

Elena didn’t hesitate. Years of buried grief and protective fury erupted into pure, calculated action. She lunged forward, drawing the heavy revolver from the folds of her gown with both hands.

“Run, Maya!” Elena screamed over the roar of the wind.

The child scrambled across the wet gravel, diving behind a cluster of jagged boulders just as the second intruder raised his weapon to fire. Elena brought the revolver up, her training from decades ago kicking in with cold precision. She fired into the ground near the second man’s feet, sending a shower of sparks flying off the rocks.

“Drop your weapon!” Elena roared, her voice echoing like thunder across the cliff.

The lead intruder cursed, frantically wiping soot from his eyes as he scrambled to grab the golden locket from the mud. But the explosion had short-circuited his comms unit, and the blinding smoke from the electrical fire was choking the clearing.

“You can’t win, old woman!” the man shouted, lunging forward with a knife drawn from his belt.

Before he could take another step, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from the access road behind the lighthouse. Headlights pierced the swirling fog, illuminating a convoy of black SUVs bearing the Vance family crest. Car doors flew open, and a dozen heavily armed private security personnel poured onto the grounds, their tactical lights instantly pinning the intruders against the stone wall of the tower.

“Drop your weapons! Federal and private security!” a booming voice commanded through a bullhorn.

The two men froze, looking from the surrounding guards to Elena, who stood tall in her ruined emerald gown, her grip on the revolver steady as a rock.
