Chapter 6 - The Voice on the Secure Line

The sharp ringing of the secure phone echoed through the damp archive room, cutting through the heavy silence like broken glass. Elena’s hand hovered inches from the receiver. In all her years running Vance Enterprises, that specific phone had only rung during moments of existential crisis—corporate sabotage, hostile board coups, or the sudden death of her husband.
She lifted the heavy black receiver and pressed it to her ear. “Speak.”
“It’s been a long time, Elena,” a voice purred from the other end. It was smooth, devoid of warmth, and utterly chilling. Victor Sterling, the ruthless CEO of Apex Global and her fiercest corporate rival.
Elena gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until her knuckles turned white. “Victor. You’ve sunk lower than I imagined, sending thugs into my home to terrorize a child.”
“Business is business, my dear,” Victor replied smoothly, the sound of a cocktail glass clinking against a table audible in the background. “And your late daughter’s little parting gift happens to contain the algorithmic blueprints for our entire offshore financial network. Sarah was smarter than we gave her credit for. She hacked our servers before she vanished.”
Elena stared down at the microscopic silver chip resting beside the gold locket. “Sarah was an artist. She didn’t know the first thing about financial servers.”
“She didn’t,” Victor agreed, his tone turning razor-sharp. “Her husband, however, was our lead systems architect before he had that unfortunate accident. When he realized what we were doing, he gave the encryption keys to Sarah. And Sarah gave them to her daughter. Now, I want the locket, Elena. If you don’t hand it over within the hour, your precious granddaughter won’t make it across the lake.”
Elena’s blood froze in her veins. “If you touch her, Victor, I will burn Apex Global to the ground, and I will start with you.”
“You’re welcome to try,” Victor said softly. “Check the security monitor on your desk.”

Elena slammed her finger onto the monitor button. The screen flickered to life, showing Arthur and little Maya stepping out of the boathouse into the pouring rain—surrounded by three men in black coats holding leveled weapons.
