Chapter 3 - The Hidden Vault Beneath the Floor

The heavy silence in the ballroom stretched to a breaking point as the intruder stepped further into the light, his polished shoes clicking sharply against the marble. Elena’s mind raced through a labyrinth of corporate enemies and long-buried family scandals. An encryption key? Sarah had never been a tech prodigy; she was a painter, a free spirit who despised the cutthroat world of Vance Enterprises. Why would men in black coats hunt a six-year-old child for a family heirloom?
“You’re insane,” Elena spat, though her grip on the gold locket tightened instinctively. “There is nothing inside this trinket except a photograph of my daughter.”
The intruder smiled, a thin, cruel parting of the lips. “Old photographs fade, Mrs. Vance. But microchips soldered into the backing plates tend to endure. Ask the girl. She watched her mother pry it open the night the fire started.”
Elena looked down. The child shook her head frantically, wide-eyed and terrified. “No! Mama said it was just a picture of you and her!”
“She lied to protect you, sweetheart,” Elena murmured, a sudden lump forming in her throat.
Without warning, the second intruder raised a hand and flicked a switch on the wall. The massive crystal chandelier flickered violently and plunged the entire ballroom into pitch darkness. A collective gasp echoed from the shadows as the panicked whispers of hidden staff members rippled through the hall.
“Grab her!” the leader barked.
Elena didn’t hesitate. Years of navigating ruthless corporate takeovers taught her how to survive in the dark. She grabbed the child by her oversized jacket, hauling her toward the velvet-draped stage at the front of the room. Her high heels snapped off against the marble, but she didn’t care, running barefoot across the slick floor as heavy footsteps charged in their direction.
“Over here!” a voice hissed from the darkness—not an intruder, but Arthur, the elderly butler who had served the Vance family for forty years.

A heavy oak panel slid open behind the stage, revealing a narrow, stone-walled staircase descending into the damp earth beneath the mansion. Arthur grabbed Elena’s arm, hauling both her and the child into the subterranean passage just as a heavy flashlight beam swept across the stage where they had been standing a second before.
