Chapter 1 - The Echo of Broken Glass

The crystal chandelier above cast a cold, fractured light across the endless marble floor of the grand ballroom. Elena Vance stood rigid in her emerald green gown, her chest heaving as she stared down at the small figure crumpled near her scuffed black shoes. The golden locket lay between them like a dropped secret, its blue gemstone catching the harsh gleam of the overhead lights. Elena’s breath came in ragged, furious gasps, her mind racing to process the impossible truth of the vintage photograph tucked inside the metal casing.
“You’re Sarah’s daughter… My granddaughter!” Elena whispered, her voice cracking with a devastation she had not felt in over two decades.
The young child blinked away fresh tears, her messy dark hair clinging to her damp forehead beneath the oversized, rain-soaked dark jacket. The small scratch on her cheek seemed to burn under the sudden, suffocating silence of the room. Servants stationed near the mahogany double doors froze, their eyes widening in sheer disbelief at the sudden shift in the formidable matriarch’s demeanor.
“My mother said you would remember,” the child said softly, her voice barely carrying across the vast, empty space.
Elena dropped to her knees, ignoring the expensive fabric of her gown pooling against the dusty floor. She reached out with trembling, manicured hands, her fingers hovering inches from the child’s small shoulders. The emerald drop earrings brushed against her flushed cheeks as she shook her head in sheer denial.
“No,” Elena choked out, the anger instantly returning, masking a deeper, more terrifying realization. “Sarah is gone. She left twenty years ago and never looked back. She took everything with her, including my heart. How do you have this locket? Who sent you here tonight?”
The child flinched, pulling back slightly. “She didn’t leave because she wanted to. She told me to run if the men in the black coats ever came back.”

Before Elena could demand another answer, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the grand entrance behind them, followed by the heavy thud of boots marching across the courtyard.
