Chapter 7 - A Desperate Gambit

The red light on the security monitor pulsed rhythmically, casting an eerie glow across Elena’s furious face. On the screen, Arthur stood with his hands raised, shielding Maya behind his frail body as the men in black coats advanced toward the wooden dock. The rain lashed down in sheets, blurring the camera lens, but the glint of steel was unmistakable.

“You’re a monster, Victor,” Elena hissed into the receiver, her voice trembling with restrained rage.

“I’m a pragmatist,” Victor’s voice replied smoothly. “Bring the locket to the old lighthouse at the edge of the cliff. Come alone. If I see local police or any of your private guards, the girl goes into the water.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Elena didn’t hesitate. She grabbed the golden locket, carefully snapping the microchip back into its hidden compartment before tucking the heirloom safely inside the pocket of her emerald green gown. She reached into the desk drawer, pulling out a heavy, vintage Colt .38 revolver that had belonged to her late husband—a relic from an era before corporate warfare became civilized by algorithms and boardrooms.

She checked the cylinder, the heavy brass cartridges clicking satisfyingly into place. Years ago, she had buried her emotions behind a wall of corporate ambition, letting her relationship with Sarah disintegrate into bitter silence. She had lost her daughter once to pride and stubbornness; she refused to lose her granddaughter to greed.

Bursting out of the archive room, Elena sprinted up the narrow stone stairs, pushing through the hidden panel into the darkened ballroom. The intruders were gone, having already retreated to coordinate with their leader at the lighthouse.

She didn’t take the main entrance. Instead, she bolted toward the service corridors, navigating the labyrinth of kitchens and pantries until she reached the rear exit leading toward the cliffside trail. The storm was reaching its peak, wind howling through the ancient pine trees and lashing the coastline with furious waves.

As she sprinted down the rocky path toward the lighthouse, the beam of a distant flashlight cut through the darkness ahead, illuminating a grim tableau waiting on the cliff edge.
