Chapter 14 - The Return of the Prodigal

Elena’s breath caught in her throat, the flashlight slipping from her trembling fingers and clattering against the concrete floor. The man sitting in the glowing blue light of the server terminal was older, his hair streaked with silver, but the sharp, intelligent eyes were unmistakable.
“Hello, Elena,” David Vance said softly, his voice echoing in the underground chamber.
Maya peeked out from behind Elena’s skirt, her eyes wide with wonder. “Grandpa?”
Elena shook her head violently, taking a staggered step backward as if she were looking at a ghost. “No… No, you died in the plane crash twenty-five years ago. We buried an empty casket. The federal investigators confirmed it.”
David stood up slowly, running a calloused hand over the stubble on his jaw. “The investigators confirmed what Victor Sterling paid them to confirm, my love. When I discovered that my own board of directors was selling our defense patents to foreign syndicates, I had to fake my death to protect you and Sarah. But Sarah… Sarah was too stubborn. She kept digging, trying to clear my name, which is why Victor targeted her all these years later.”
Elena felt the floor tilt beneath her feet. All her anger, all her ruthless ambition, all the cold years spent building a fortress of wealth—it had all been built on a foundation of lies orchestrated by the very people she trusted.
“You let me mourn you,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking with a devastation far deeper than any corporate betrayal. “You let Sarah live in hiding, terrified and hunted, while you sat down here playing God with our lives.”
“I had no choice,” David said, stepping forward with his hands raised pleadingly. “If I had surfaced even a year ago, Victor would have killed you both. The microchip Maya carried here tonight was the final piece of evidence I needed to dismantle Apex Global from the inside out. It’s over, Elena. Victor’s servers are locked, his accounts are frozen, and federal marshals are raiding his penthouse right now.”
Elena looked at her husband, then down at Maya, who was watching them both with quiet, sorrowful eyes. The immense weight of the past twenty-five years seemed to crush down on her shoulders, stripping away the armor she had worn for so long.

Before Elena could answer, the security monitor on David’s central desk flashed red, displaying a live feed of the front gates where heavy sirens began to wail through the night air.
