Chapter 5 - The Cipher of the Past

The lantern light flickered over the torn piece of notebook paper. On it was sketched a crude drawing of a corporate logo—not Vance Enterprises, but Apex Global, the ruthless conglomerate that had attempted a hostile takeover of Elena’s company three years ago. Beneath the logo was a string of numbers written in Sarah’s distinct, looping handwriting: 04-12-88.
Elena stared at the numbers, her breath catching in her throat. That was the exact date Sarah had run away from home after a bitter argument over the company’s unethical acquisition policies.
“Arthur,” Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant sound of heavy boots stomping on the floorboards above the catacombs. “Take Maya to the boathouse now. Do not wait for me.”
“Mrs. Vance—,” Arthur began, but Elena cut him off with a fierce glare.
“Go!”
Without another word, the old butler gently pulled the hesitant child into the darker recesses of the stone tunnel. Maya looked back once, her large, tear-filled eyes locked on Elena’s emerald gown before disappearing into the gloom.
Elena turned back toward the stairs leading to the archive room. The heavy iron key slid smoothly into the reinforced steel door at the end of the passage. The lock clicked open, revealing a room lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and a single oak desk illuminated by a green banker’s lamp. This was where she kept the private journals, the confidential merger reports, and the records of her husband’s legacy.
She walked quickly to the desk, pulled open the bottom drawer, and retrieved a small magnetic screwdriver. Returning to the golden locket, she placed it carefully under the green lamp’s harsh beam. With steady, practiced hands, she inserted the tip of the tool into the tiny seam along the edge of the oval metal casing.
The backing plate popped loose with a soft snap. Inside, alongside the tiny black-and-white photograph of a young Elena holding a giggling baby Sarah, lay a microscopic silver chip embedded in the paper backing.

Before Elena could examine it closer, the private phone on the desk—a secure line that only three people in the world knew—suddenly began to ring with a shrill, piercing tone.
