Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Catacombs

The stone stairs were slick with moisture, smelling of damp earth and century-old dust. Arthur slammed the hidden panel shut, throwing a heavy iron bolt into place just as a muffled crash echoed from the ballroom above. The sound of splintering wood indicated the intruders had forced their way past the stage curtains.

“Are you alright, madam?” Arthur whispered, his breathing heavy as he handed Elena a small, brass-framed lantern. The flickering flame cast long, dancing shadows against the rough-hewn walls of the subterranean catacombs.

Elena knelt beside the child, gently brushing the wet, dark hair from the girl’s tear-stained face. “What is your name?” she asked, her voice softening despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

“Maya,” the child replied, her voice trembling. “Mama named me after the flower that grew outside our window.”

Elena felt a sharp pang in her chest. Sarah had always loved those blue mountain flowers. The realization that her daughter had lived a quiet, hidden life while she sat in her empty, luxurious mansion filled her with a corrosive wave of guilt. She opened her palm, staring down at the gold locket. If there was a microchip hidden inside, she needed to find it before the men above tore the mansion apart brick by brick.

“Arthur,” Elena said, her voice hard and resolute. “Take Maya through the old drainage tunnel to the boathouse. Get her onto the launch.”

“And you, Mrs. Vance?” Arthur asked, stepping back in alarm. “You cannot stay down here alone, and you certainly cannot go back up there.”

“I have to find out what they’re looking for,” Elena replied, pulling a heavy iron key ring from her pocket—the master key to the estate’s secure archive room. “They think they can intimidate me in my own home? They have no idea who they’re dealing with.”

Maya suddenly grabbed Elena’s emerald-sleeved wrist, her small fingers ice-cold. “Don’t go, Grandma. The man with the silver ring… he’s the one who hurt Mama.”

Elena froze, a cold dread washing over her as Maya pulled a crumpled scrap of paper from her pocket and pressed it into Elena’s palm.
