Chapter 8 - The Remote Wipe

The red warning text pulsed rhythmically on the high-definition monitor, casting an eerie crimson glow across the dark mahogany paneling of the master study. Clara’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, her instincts as a senior operations director kicking in instantly as she tried to isolate the local network from the external intrusion.

"Kill the main router!" Clara shouted over the sudden, shrill alarm screeching from the server rack. "Dad, the master circuit breaker is behind the utility panel in the corner!"

Richard didn't hesitate. He strode across the Persian rug, ripped open the metal utility door set into the wood-paneled wall, and threw the heavy master breaker switch downward with all his might.

The piercing alarm cut out mid-shriek. The glowing blue lights on the server rack blinked out, and the computer monitor went instantly pitch black. The room was plunged into a heavy, breathless silence, broken only by the sound of Clara’s rapid, controlled breathing.

"Did we catch it in time?" Richard asked, stepping away from the utility panel and wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.

Clara stared at the dead, black screen for a long, agonizing moment. "I don't know," she murmured, standing up from the executive chair and pressing a hand to her lower back. "If the remote wipe protocol reached sector four before the power dropped, the entire clinical trial database—two years of patient genome mappings—is completely gone."

"Let's not jump to conclusions," Richard said, stepping toward the concealed alcove and pulling a portable diagnostic hard drive from his interior suit pocket. "Let's check the local physical backup logs directly from the hardware."

He knelt beside the server rack, popped open the lower chassis panel, and plugged the diagnostic drive into the machine's primary motherboard port. A tiny indicator light on the drive blinked yellow, then slowly shifted to a steady, reassuring green.

"The physical drive array is intact," Richard announced, letting out a heavy breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. "The remote wipe command initiated an overwrite sequence, but our offline redundancy protocol kicked in and blocked the external handshake just three seconds before completion."

Clara exhaled slowly, her shoulders dropping an inch as the acute tension in her chest finally eased. "Thank god. If Kross Bio-Industries got those files, our upcoming FDA drug approval hearings would have been dead in the water."

"Which brings us back to the real problem," Richard said, standing up and dusting off his knees. "Someone inside this estate—someone with local network access—just tried to hand our entire company over to Viktor Kross while the police and federal agents were downstairs dealing with Julian and Vivian."

Clara’s mind raced through the list of people who had been inside the estate tonight. The catering staff, the private security detail, the estate manager, and a handful of close corporate associates. None of them had the technical clearance to access the master study’s secondary server rack without triggering the silent perimeter alarms.

Unless someone had bypassed the alarm system using a master administrative override key.

"Only three people have the master override code," Clara said slowly, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Me, my father, and..." She stopped, her eyes widening in sudden, absolute horror.

"And Thomas Vance," Richard finished her sentence, his voice cold as ice. "Your cousin."

Clara shook her head instinctively, rejecting the thought. "No. Thomas has been in Geneva overseeing European expansion for six months. He wouldn't—"

A soft, rhythmic clicking sound interrupted her sentence. It wasn't coming from the computer server. It was coming from the hallway outside the master study, near the private elevator doors.

Someone was standing right outside the heavy mahogany door, tapping a sequence into the digital keypad.
