Chapter 4 - The Midnight Knock

The heavy oak and glass double doors rattled under the force of another sharp, authoritative knock. The ambient tension in the white marble foyer spiked instantly. Julian stopped struggling against the bodyguards, his eyes darting toward the entryway with undisguised panic.

"Who is that?" Julian breathed out, his face pale. "Nobody knows we’re here tonight. The gala was supposed to be private."

Richard didn't blink. He gestured to one of the bodyguards, who released Julian with a contemptuous shove and strode toward the doors. The heavy bolt slid back with a metallic screech, and the door swung open to reveal two uniformed officers of the municipal police department, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray trench coat carrying a metallic briefcase.

"Richard Vance?" the lead officer asked, flashing a badge. "We received an anonymous tip regarding corporate asset flight and international wire fraud originating from this address."

Vivian’s face lost its remaining color. She took a quiet step backward toward the curved staircase, her gold heels clicking softly against the marble. "There must be some misunderstanding," she began, pasting on a brittle, nervous smile. "We were just discussing—"

"Stay right where you are, Ms. Sterling," the woman in the trench coat interrupted, flipping open her briefcase to reveal a portable printer and a stack of federal warrants. "Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation. Financial Crimes Division."

Clara watched the scene unfold with a calm that surprised even herself. The profound grief that had shattered her heart minutes ago was rapidly hardening into an unyielding resolve. She walked slowly toward her father, who wrapped a supportive arm around her shoulders.

"Are you looking for Julian Vance or Vivian Sterling?" Clara asked clearly, her voice echoing in the vast space.

"Both, Mrs. Vance-Miller," the federal agent replied, looking directly at Julian. "And potentially anyone else who authorized the transfer of twelve million dollars out of the Vance-Marconi biomedical research fund into an unregistered Cayman Islands account this afternoon."

Julian’s knees buckled. Without the bodyguards holding him up, he would have collapsed onto the floor. "Twelve million? No, that was supposed to be a temporary bridge loan for the gallery acquisition. Vivian said—"

"Vivian didn't sign the final authorization protocol," Agent Miller said, pulling a certified digital receipt from her folder. "Your biometric override key did, Julian. At 4:15 PM today, from your private study upstairs."

Vivian’s eyes widened in sheer terror as she realized the trap had just snapped shut on her as well. She had used Julian’s credentials, yes, but she had been sloppy; her own private corporate email address was embedded in the metadata of the routing instructions.

"He gave me the access codes willingly!" Vivian screamed, dropping her cool facade as panic took over. "He wanted to liquidate the trust so we could run away together to Zurich! I have the voice memos!"

"Play them," Clara said quietly.

Julian stared at Vivian as if seeing a monster for the very first time. "You recorded us?"

Before Vivian could scream another denial, Agent Miller’s tablet lit up, and a crystal-clear audio file began playing out loud through the foyer's integrated smart speakers, broadcasting Julian's voice promising to strip his wife's family blind.
