Chapter 6 - The Hidden Wire

The declaration hung in the electrified air of the grand foyer, silencing even Julian’s ragged gasps from the floor. Vivian stopped struggling against the officers, her chest heaving beneath the gold slip dress as she flashed a desperate, triumphant smirk toward Agent Miller.
"Tell them," Vivian demanded, her voice regaining a fraction of its former haughty confidence. "Tell them why I was here tonight. I’ve been working with the federal task force for three weeks. The moment Julian signed those transfer documents, the trap was set."
Agent Miller sighed, a subtle expression of professional annoyance crossing her face. She stepped closer to Vivian, retrieved a small black transmitter unit clipped to the inner lining of the gold dress, and disconnected it with a sharp click.
"You were instructed to wear the wire for surveillance purposes, Ms. Sterling," Agent Miller said evenly. "You were explicitly not authorized to initiate new asset transfers or retain stolen intellectual property for your personal enrichment."
Clara watched the exchange with a sharp, analytical eye. "So she was playing both sides," Clara noted aloud, looking at her father. "Trying to steal the research funds for herself while cutting a deal with the feds to save her own skin."
"Exactly," Richard Vance rumbled, stepping forward to stand beside his daughter. He looked down at Julian, who was still huddled on the marble floor, staring blankly ahead. "And your brilliant husband here was simply the disposable pawn in her grand embezzlement scheme."
Julian slowly lifted his head, his dark hair disheveled, sweat plastered to his forehead. The horrifying realization of how thoroughly he had been manipulated settled into his bones. Vivian hadn't loved him; she hadn't even respected him. To her, he was just a biometric signature with legal access to millions.
"You used me," Julian whispered, his voice cracking as he stared at Vivian. "Every weekend at the lake house, every promise about our future... it was all a lie to get the encryption keys."
Vivian sneered down at him. "Please, Julian. You were boring, you were predictable, and your bed game was entirely mediocre. Did you really think someone like me was going to settle down in a suburban colonial with a middle-management corporate climber?"
The cruelty of her words seemed to physically strike Julian. He curled inward, burying his face in his hands as quiet, shuddering sobs finally escaped him—not the restrained dignity of a man facing ruin, but the pathetic wailing of a coward who had lost everything.
"Take them both out," Agent Miller ordered the local officers. "Process them downtown. Separate vehicles."
As the officers hauled Vivian away—still protesting and demanding to speak to her legal counsel—and hoisted Julian to his feet, dragging him toward the open double doors, Clara felt a strange sense of profound lightness. The rot at the center of her life had been excised, violently and completely.
"Clara," Julian choked out as the officers pulled him past her. "Please. Look at me. We can fix this. Think of the baby."
Clara turned her head slowly, looking at her husband with eyes as cold and hard as the marble beneath their feet. "My baby will never know a coward named Julian," she said quietly.
The heavy double doors swung shut, cutting off Julian's desperate pleas and plunging the foyer into a heavy, resonant silence. Richard exhaled slowly, turning to his daughter.
"Are you alright, sweetheart?" Richard asked, his stern exterior softening into genuine paternal concern.

Clara placed both hands on her swollen belly, feeling a surge of fierce, protective warmth. "I’ve never been better, Dad," she replied, her eyes drifting toward the grand staircase. "Now, let’s go check the master study. There’s a secondary corporate server Julian didn't know about, and I want to see what else he tried to hide."
