Chapter 5 - The Digital Confession

The tinny, unmistakable sound of Julian’s voice bouncing off the high marble walls of the foyer laid bare every calculated betrayal. The audio recording detailed not just an affair, but a meticulous, months-long conspiracy to systematically drain the Vance-Marconi biomedical research fund—the very life's work Clara had dedicated her career to managing.

"Once the pregnancy is past the first trimester, we pull the liquidity," Julian’s recorded voice stated smoothly through the speaker system. "Clara won't have the legal standing to challenge a corporate restructuring if the board signs off under duress."

Julian stood frozen, his eyes wide and hollow. He looked at Clara, whose expression remained an unreadable mask of cold marble. The man in the white button-down shirt looked smaller now, stripped of his arrogance, his wealth, and his pathetic illusions of control.

"Do you have anything to say in your defense, Mr. Vance?" Agent Miller asked, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs gleaming in her hand.

Julian’s lips parted, but no sound came out. He slowly turned his head toward Vivian, seeking an alliance, a shred of comfort, or perhaps just someone to share the blame with. But Vivian was already unzipping her designer clutch, her fingers frantically digging inside.

"I cooperated under duress," Vivian blurted out, her voice pitching upward in panic as she pulled a small digital recorder from her bag. "He threatened me! He said if I didn't help him launder the money through my gallery front, he would release confidential medical records regarding my past!"

"Liar!" Julian finally found his voice, lunging toward Vivian with a snarl of pure rage. "You came to me! You hunted me down at the country club specifically because you knew my marriage was hitting a rough patch!"

The two bodyguards reacted instantly, intercepting Julian and shoving him hard against the marble pillar. The impact knocked the wind out of him, sliding him down to the floor in a crumpled heap of wrinkled white cotton and black pants.

Clara watched the pathetic spectacle without shedding a single additional tear. The emotional dam had broken and emptied completely, leaving behind a sterile, untouchable strength. She placed a hand gently on her stomach, feeling another reassuring kick.

"Officer," Clara said, her voice cutting cleanly through Julian’s ragged breathing and Vivian’s whimpering denials. "Please ensure both of them are searched thoroughly before transport. My father’s security team flagged an encrypted flash drive in Ms. Sterling’s purse earlier this evening. It contains proprietary genome sequencing data belonging to our research lab."

Agent Miller nodded sharply. Two local police officers stepped past Julian on the floor, pinning Vivian’s arms behind her back despite her shrill protests and snapping the cold metal cuffs around her wrists.

"Wait," Vivian shrieked as they dragged her toward the double doors. "You can't arrest me! I have an agreement with the federal prosecutor’s office! I’m wearing a wire right now!"
