Chapter 7 - The Master Study

The private elevator ride to the third floor of the estate was entirely silent. The soft hum of the hydraulic mechanism provided a stark contrast to the chaotic storm of emotions that had just torn through the grand foyer below. When the polished brass doors slid open, they revealed the sprawling master study—a room decorated in dark mahogany, leather-bound books, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling manicured lawns.
Clara stepped out first, her off-shoulder white dress sweeping gracefully across the imported Persian rug. Richard followed closely behind, his hand resting reassuringly on his daughter's shoulder.
"The secondary server is hidden behind the built-in bookcase," Clara instructed, walking directly toward a heavy mahogany shelving unit filled with classical literature and historical archives. "Julian thought he was the only one who remembered the manual override code from the estate's original architectural blueprints."
Richard stepped up to the shelving unit, tapping a sequence of three specific book spines—*The Count of Monte Cristo*, War and Peace, and Atlas Shrugged. With a low, pneumatic hiss, a section of the heavy bookshelf swung outward, revealing a concealed alcove housing a glowing, industrial-grade server rack and a sleek executive terminal.
"Impressive," Richard muttered, peering at the blinking blue lights of the hardware. "He really thought he had built an impenetrable digital fortress."
"He was arrogant, not a genius," Clara replied coldly, walking over to the terminal and tapping the activation key. A login prompt materialized on the high-definition monitor.
Clara didn't hesitate. She placed her index finger on the biometric scanner built into the keyboard, and simultaneously entered her personal corporate encryption passphrase. The system whirred softly, bypassing Julian’s administrative lockouts with a series of clean, green authorization prompts.
"Access granted. Welcome back, Chief Operations Officer Vance-Marconi," the automated interface chimed gently.
A cascading waterfall of data files, financial logs, and encrypted emails flooded the screen. Clara began sorting through the directories, her eyes scanning the file names with clinical precision. Most of it was routine biomedical research data regarding their revolutionary gene-therapy trials, but a specific folder caught her attention. It was labeled simply: Project Janus.
"Dad, look at this," Clara whispered, clicking open the directory.
Richard leaned over her shoulder, his eyes narrowing as he read the file descriptions. Project Janus wasn't an internal R&D initiative at all. It was a comprehensive, highly detailed blueprint for a hostile corporate takeover of Vance Enterprises, orchestrated jointly by Julian, Vivian Sterling, and an unknown third party whose financial backing traced directly back to a shell corporation in Zurich.
"A third player," Richard growled, his fists clenching at his sides. "Julian wasn't just stealing funds; he was selling our proprietary immunotherapy portfolio to our biggest international competitor—Kross Bio-Industries."
Clara felt a chill run down her spine. Kross Bio-Industries was run by Viktor Kross, a ruthless corporate raider who had spent the last decade trying to acquire Vance Enterprises by any means necessary. If Viktor got his hands on their immunotherapy patents, Clara's life’s work—and the medical futures of thousands of clinical trial patients—would be completely compromised.
"Look at the timestamp on the latest data export," Clara pointed to a file at the bottom of the directory. "It was uploaded to an external server at 6:00 PM tonight. Right while we were downstairs in the foyer."
Richard grabbed the edge of the mahogany desk, his face flushing a deep, dangerous crimson. "Someone else has physical access to a relay terminal. There's a leak inside the house."
Before Clara could process the terrifying implications of her father's words, the terminal screen flickered violently. The green authorization prompts vanished, replaced instantly by a stark, flashing red warning box across the entire display.
