Chapter 11 - The Sudden Collapse

The chilling implication of Thomas’s words hung in the air like a physical blow. Richard took a half-step forward, his expression hardening into pure, unadulterated fury, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger of his Sig Sauer.

"You underestimate me, Thomas," Richard growled, his voice vibrating with a lifetime of corporate warfare and hard-earned survival. "I built this empire from the ground up. I didn't survive three hostile takeovers in the nineties to be pushed out by a corporate parasite in a tailored suit."

Thomas didn't flinch. Instead, his smile widened just a fraction, reaching his cold, calculating eyes. "Times change, Uncle. The old rules of corporate survival don't apply anymore. Bloodlines don't protect you when the algorithmic trading bots control the board votes."

Before Richard could respond, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the corner of the master study near the concealed server rack.

Clara whipped her head around, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the ventilation grate set high into the dark mahogany wall slowly slide open. A thin, sweet-smelling vapor began hissing softly into the room, billowing downward toward the Persian rug in a thick, unnatural cloud.

"Poison," Clara gasped, her hand instinctively flying to cover her mouth and nose. She stumbled backward against the desk, a wave of sudden, violent dizziness washing over her. "The HVAC system... it’s been overridden."

Richard turned sharply toward the door, coughing as the heavy, chemical-laden air hit his lungs. He raised his pistol, aiming directly at Thomas, but his knees suddenly buckled beneath him. The SIG Sauer slipped from his trembling fingers, hitting the Persian rug with a dull thud.

"You... poisoned us," Richard wheezed, grabbing the edge of the mahogany desk to steady himself as his legs gave out completely. He slid slowly down to the floor, his breathing turning shallow and ragged.

Thomas stepped backward out into the hallway, pulling a specialized gas mask from his briefcase and sliding it over his face with practiced efficiency. Through the clear respirator filter, his voice sounded muffled but entirely calm.

"Not poison, Uncle Richard. Just a heavy-duty medical sedative," Thomas replied smoothly, watching his uncle slide onto the floor. "Completely untraceable synthetic neurotoxin. In twenty minutes, your vital signs will flatline just enough to register as a severe cardiac event on the paramedic monitors."

Clara tried to scream, tried to run toward the door to stop him, but the chemical cloud was too dense, too fast-acting. Her limbs felt like lead. The off-shoulder white dress swirled around her ankles as her knees gave way, dropping her heavily onto the polished marble floor near the server rack.

"My... baby," Clara whispered, her vision blurring at the edges as darkness rapidly closed in around her.

Thomas stood in the doorway, looking down at them with absolute indifference. He pulled out his corporate smartphone, tapped a single button on the screen, and initiated a pre-recorded emergency dispatch call to the local municipal hospital.

"This is CEO Thomas Vance of Vance-Marconi," Thomas stated into his phone, his voice steady and professional. "We have an acute medical emergency at the primary estate. Severe cardiac arrest. Send an ambulance immediately."

He hung up the phone without waiting for a reply, stepped backward into the hallway, and pulled the heavy mahogany study doors shut with a definitive, echoing click.
