Chapter 2 - The Cold Inheritance

The heavy silence that followed the thud of the envelope hitting the marble floor felt suffocating. Richard Vance did not immediately pick it up. Instead, his piercing gaze remained fixed on Vivian, whose composure was visibly cracking beneath the older man's scrutiny.
"Pick it up, Julian," Richard commanded, his voice devoid of any warmth. "Read aloud what your little collaborator filed this morning."
Julian hesitated, his hands trembling as he stared down at the cream-colored legal envelope resting near his black-shined shoes. He slowly bent down, his white button-down shirt pulling taut across his back, and retrieved the document.
"I said, read it," Richard repeated, stepping closer.
Clara stood frozen, her hands still instinctively shielding her unborn child. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek, her initial shock hardening into a cold, protective instinct. She recognized that envelope stock; it was the exclusive stationery of Vance Enterprises' corporate legal counsel.
"It's just a routine restructuring of the trust," Julian stammered, flipping open the folded pages with frantic, clumsy fingers. His eyes scanned the first paragraph, and all the color drained entirely from his face.
"Restructuring?" Vivian interjected, her voice losing its previous honeyed edge. She shot Julian a warning glare. "It’s the legally mandated transfer of assets following a dissolution of partnership."
"Shut your mouth, Vivian," Richard snapped, his eyes flashing with sudden fury. He turned back to Julian. "Tell your wife whose signature is on the bottom of that asset seizure form, Julian. Go ahead. Tell the mother of your child who just signed away her home, her medical trust, and her share of the foundation."
Julian's breath hitched. He looked between Richard and Clara, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The betrayal wasn't just marital anymore; it was corporate corporate warfare executed with surgical precision.
"Clara," Julian began, taking a desperate half-step toward his weeping wife. "It’s not what it looks like. Vivian and I only—"
"You only what?" Clara interrupted, her voice steadying with a sudden, terrifying surge of adrenaline. She took a deliberate step forward, ignoring the physical ache in her lower back. "You only signed away our child’s future to fund her gallery?"
Before Julian could scramble for another lie, Richard's phone buzzed aggressively in his tailored suit pocket. The billionaire pulled it out, glanced at the glowing screen, and a dark, humorless smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Don't bother lying anymore, Julian," Richard said quietly, holding up the phone for everyone to see. "The freeze on your personal accounts just cleared. Every single cent is gone."
