Chapter 7 - The Iron Gates Slam Shut

The sharp, metallic shriek of heavy hydraulic locks engaging echoed through the subterranean corridors of the estate, followed immediately by the dull thud of the perimeter gates slamming shut against their brick pillars. Officer Vance spun around, his hand instinctively dropping to his sidearm as he stared at the glowing red warning light flashing on the smart-home console. The digital interface displayed a system override code originating from an off-site terminal registered to the Vanderbilt Family Trust executive board.
"What is the meaning of this?" Officer Vance demanded, turning his stern gaze directly onto Clara, who stood unbothered by the sudden lockdown, smoothing the wrinkles on her ruined maroon dress with chilling composure. "Did you just lock us inside your property?"
"My estate, my rules, Officer," Clara replied calmly, her voice entirely devoid of panic. "As the primary trustee of this property, I possess the legal authority to initiate a security lockdown whenever unauthorized individuals attempt to tamper with my internal servers. And right now, as far as the automated system is concerned, you and your partner are trespassing without a signed judicial warrant."
Officer Miller stepped forward, his face hardening as he gripped the radio microphone on his shoulder. "Ma’am, we responded to an active emergency call regarding domestic violence. You cannot legally trap law enforcement officers inside a private residence to obstruct an ongoing investigation."
"Watch me," Clara smiled coldly, her eyes flashing with dangerous confidence. "By the time your backup manages to cut through those reinforced iron gates with heavy machinery, my legal team will have already obtained a court order freezing every asset your department relies on for community outreach."
Eleanor clutched Lily tighter to her chest, feeling the baby's tiny heart beating rapidly against her own ribcage. The suffocating atmosphere of the basement felt heavier by the second, trapping them in a subterranean cage with a woman who held absolute power over their lives. Eleanor knew that arguing with Clara was useless; the battle had long since moved past words and into a ruthless war of survival.
"Arthur," Eleanor said quietly, her voice cutting through the tense silence like a razor-sharp blade as she looked directly at her husband. "Look at your mother. Look at what she’s doing to us. Are you going to stand there and help her lock your own child inside this prison?"
Arthur stared at the floor, his breathing shallow and erratic as the white fabric of his shirt rose and fell in rapid succession. He looked up slowly, his eyes brimming with a mixture of profound guilt and paralyzing fear, before whispering words that shattered the final illusion of their marriage.
