Chapter 2 - The Pantry Panic Room

The heavy mahogany door of the pantry swung open with a soft, expensive click, revealing floor-to-ceiling shelves stacked neatly with imported preserves, vintage wines, and emergency rations. Eleanor stepped inside, the cool air smelling faintly of aged balsamic and dried lavender, shielding little Lily against her chest as the soft glow of the smart-home wall tablet illuminated the cramped space. Her finger hovered over the glass screen, pressing the emergency security shortcut that directly linked their private estate network to the municipal police dispatch. The artificial intelligence voice responded immediately with a calm, synthesized monotone.
"Emergency services notified. Units are currently entering the perimeter gates. Please remain on the line."
"Hurry," Eleanor whispered into the microphone, her eyes darting back toward the open doorway where the faint sound of heavy boots echoed across the hardwood floors of the grand foyer. "They’re inside the house. My mother-in-law is escalating this, and my husband is completely compromised."
Suddenly, a heavy shadow fell across the pantry threshold, blocking out the warm light of the hallway. Arthur appeared in the doorway, his white button-up shirt slightly rumpled, his expression a tangled mask of desperation, fear, and deep-seated familial guilt. He reached out a hand, his fingers twitching as if he wanted to pull Eleanor back out into the open, but he stopped short when he saw the blue light reflecting off her tear-stained cheeks.
"Eleanor, please, hang up the phone right now," Arthur pleaded, his voice cracking slightly as he took a cautious step into the confined space, the smell of his expensive cologne mixing with the scent of vinegar. "If the police walk in here and see this mess, Mother will use her entire trust fund to press charges against you for assault. You don't know her power."
"I don't care about her money, Arthur," Eleanor retorted, her gaze hardening into steel as she tightened her grip on the toddler, who had finally quieted down, sucking her thumb while staring blankly at her father's shoes. "She threw emotional abuse at our daughter, and now she’s going to face the consequences of living in the real world."
"You think the real world protects people like us?" Arthur laughed bitterly, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed off the glass jars of pickled peaches lining the shelf behind his head. "Look around this house, Eleanor. Every single brick, every piece of furniture, every dollar in our bank accounts belongs to Clara's estate. We are nothing without her."

"Speak for yourself," Eleanor said coldly, stepping past him into the hallway just as the front double doors creaked open to reveal the imposing silhouettes of two armed police officers stepping into the grand foyer.
