Chapter 5 - The Locked Vault

The heavy iron-reinforced door of the basement security room clicked open with a loud, mechanical hiss that reverberated through the damp, subterranean corridors of the Vanderbilt estate. Officer Vance led the small procession down the concrete stairs, his flashlight cutting through the thick darkness to reveal rows of heavy steel server racks humming quietly in the climate-controlled enclosure. Arthur followed closely behind, his breath coming in short, panicked gasps, while Eleanor clutched Lily tightly, her mind racing to find a way out of the trap Clara had so meticulously constructed around them.
"If the cloud backups were disabled on the main network tablet, there has to be a hardwired offline secondary drive installed per municipal building codes for historical archiving," Eleanor stated firmly, her voice echoing off the concrete walls as she scanned the racks.
Officer Vance nodded approvingly, stepping up to the primary mainframe console. "You're right. Most smart-home builders mandate an immutable secondary black box to protect against local tampering or power surges. Let's see if your mother-in-law was smart enough to figure out how to disable that one too."
Arthur nervously wrung his hands, his white shirt sticking to his back as he stared at the blinking green lights of the server. "Eleanor, please, just drop it. If you dig deeper into Clara's systems, you're going to uncover things that were meant to stay buried. Trust me, some doors shouldn't be opened."
"What are you talking about, Arthur?" Eleanor asked, spinning around to face her husband, her eyes narrowing as she detected a genuine note of terror in his voice. "What is your mother hiding in these servers besides her own malice?"
Before Arthur could answer, a loud beep echoed from the console as Officer Vance pressed a final sequence of keys. A hidden partition on the screen unlocked, revealing a single video file labeled with a date from five years ago—long before Eleanor had ever set foot in the mansion. Officer Vance clicked the file, and a grainy, high-definition video feed sprang to life on the monitor, showing the exact interior of the dining room where they now stood.
On the screen, a much younger Arthur stood arguing with Clara over a stack of legal documents, while a woman Eleanor had never seen before—someone bearing an uncanny, striking resemblance to Eleanor herself—stood frozen in the corner holding a suitcase, tears streaming down her face.
"Who is that?" Eleanor whispered, the blood draining completely from her face as she looked from the screen to her trembling husband.

"That," Clara's voice rang out smoothly from the doorway as she stepped out of the shadows of the basement stairs with a terrifying grin, "was Arthur's first wife, before she learned the hard way that nobody leaves the Vanderbilt family alive."
