Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the First Wife

The fluorescent lights of the basement server room hummed with a low, menacing frequency as the grainy video on the monitor continued to play in absolute silence. On the screen, the woman resembling Eleanor dropped her leather suitcase onto the hardwood floor of the dining room, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs before she turned and bolted through the front doors into the pouring rain. Arthur stood frozen in front of the console, his head bowed in utter defeat, the white fabric of his shirt looking like a shroud in the harsh subterranean glare.

"You didn't just break her spirit, did you?" Eleanor breathed, her voice trembling not with fear, but with a sudden, overwhelming wave of disgust as she looked at Clara standing by the doorway like a vulture waiting for carrion. "What did you do to her, Clara? Where is she now?"

Clara laughed, a dry, papery sound that lacked any warmth or humanity. "She took a generous settlement and disappeared into the anonymity she came from, my dear. Just like you will, once the ink on the divorce papers dries and the courts grant me full custody of my granddaughter."

"Custody?" Eleanor stepped forward, shielding Lily with her body as if physically blocking a physical blow. "You have no legal right to my child! You're nothing more than a bitter, manipulative tyrant who destroys everyone who gets close to your son!"

Officer Vance stepped between them, holding up a hand to restore order while his eyes darted suspiciously between Clara and the monitor. "Hold on a minute. This footage changes the nature of this call entirely. If there’s a history of intimidation, forced isolation, and psychological coercion documented in these archives, this isn't just a domestic dispute anymore. This crosses the line into systematic abuse."

"Officer, I suggest you watch your tone," Clara warned, her voice dropping an octave as she stepped closer, her posture radiating old-money entitlement and political influence. "I happen to sit on the board of commissioners that oversees your department's annual budget. I would hate for a simple misunderstanding about a broken dinner plate to suddenly result in a severe shortage of precinct resources."

Arthur winced, his face flushing with deep shame as he looked at the police officer. "Just... just listen to her, Officer Vance. It’s not worth your career. My mother always wins."

Eleanor stared at her husband in absolute disbelief, the last remnants of her affection for the weak-willed man evaporating into the cold basement air. "You're pathetic, Arthur. You've spent your entire life cowering behind her apron strings, and you're willing to let her steal our daughter just to keep your trust fund intact."

"You don't understand the trap," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand toward Eleanor. "If you cross her, she doesn't just ruin you legally; she destroys your very existence."

Suddenly, the smart-home terminal on the console beeped sharply, and a high-priority system alert flashed across the screen in bright red letters, announcing that all perimeter gates had just been forcefully locked from an external override code.
