Chapter 3 - Uniforms in the Foyer

The two police officers stepped across the threshold with practiced ease, their heavy boots clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor of the grand foyer, their hands resting naturally near their holstered sidearms. Officer Vance, a seasoned veteran with graying temples and piercing blue eyes, scanned the expansive room before his gaze locked onto Eleanor, who stood tall in her vibrant blue silk shirt with Lily clutched safely against her chest. Behind her, the wide doorway of the dining room revealed Clara sitting regally amidst a battlefield of white rice and scattered vegetables, looking like a deposed queen waiting for her executioner.
"We received an automated distress call from this residence," Officer Vance announced, his voice carrying an undeniable authority that immediately silenced the whispers of the cavernous hallway. "Dispatch indicated a report of domestic disturbance and potential assault. Who placed the call?"
"I did," Eleanor stated clearly, stepping forward to bridge the distance between them while Arthur hovered anxiously in the background like a ghost tied to his past. "My mother-in-law subjected my one-year-old child to verbal abuse, and when I intervened to protect my family, she escalated the situation."
Officer Miller, the younger partner, stepped toward the dining room, peering at Clara's rice-covered maroon dress with a raised eyebrow before glancing back at Eleanor. "Ma'am, looking at the state of that dining room, it appears there might have been a physical altercation from both sides. We’re going to need everyone to step back and explain exactly what happened here tonight."
Clara finally stood up from her chair, the loose grains of rice cascading onto the floor with a dry rustle, her posture rigid as she marched out of the dining room toward the officers with an air of absolute entitlement. "Officer, my daughter-in-law has completely lost her senses," Clara declared, her voice dripping with calculated venom and practiced sorrow. "She unprovokedly assaulted me with a dinner plate, endangering her own child in a fit of psychotic rage. I want her removed from my property immediately."
"She’s lying!" Arthur shouted, finally breaking his silence as he stepped between his mother and the police officers, his face flushed with a sudden surge of protective instinct. "Mother, stop this right now! You pushed her to this point, and you know damn well you did!"
Officer Vance held up a hand, halting the rising tide of shouting before it could spiral completely out of control. "Nobody is going anywhere until we review the internal security footage and get to the bottom of this."

Eleanor felt her stomach drop sharply as Vance's words echoed in the quiet foyer, realizing with sudden dread that the mansion's private surveillance system recorded every single second of their lives, and Clara controlled the master password.
