Chapter 10 - The Secret Inheritance

The heavy mahogany doors of the study shuddered as a sudden, violent gust of wind howled against the reinforced glass of the French windows, rattling the antique frames in their casings. Officer Vance didn't flinch; instead, his eyes remained locked on the signature at the bottom of Addendum C, his professional instincts telling him that something far darker than a simple prenuptial dispute was buried beneath the layers of Vanderbilt wealth. He reached down, carefully lifting the parchment to examine the watermark stamped into the heavy paper fibers.
"This watermark isn't from five years ago when you were married, Mr. Vanderbilt," Officer Vance noted quietly, running his thumb over the embossed crest. "This paper stock was manufactured over fifteen years ago. This exact legal template was used in a completely different family settlement long before Eleanor was even in the picture."
Arthur went completely rigid, the color draining entirely from his face as he took a half-step backward into the shadow of the towering bookshelves. "What... what are you talking about, Officer? That's impossible. It's our marriage contract."
"It's not," Eleanor whispered, a cold realization dawning in her mind as she connected the grainy basement video of the first wife with the yellowed paper on the desk. "It's the exact same contract you had your first wife sign before you drove her out of this house, isn't it, Clara? You just changed the names on the form and had Arthur trick me into signing recycled paper!"
Clara’s composed facade flickered for a fraction of a second, a microscopic twitch of her left eye betraying the sudden spike of genuine panic beneath her icy exterior. She quickly recovered, her lips pressing into a thin, hard line as she glared at the veteran police officer. "You are bordering on slander, Officer. My legal team will eat you alive for making such baseless accusations without a forensics warrant."
"We don't need a forensics warrant to recognize a recycled template of institutional coercion," Officer Miller said sharply, pulling his notebook from his breast pocket and clicking his pen with a crisp, authoritative snap. "We have a documented history of psychological entrapment, a locked perimeter trapping law enforcement against their will, and fraudulent contracts used to seize custody of a minor."
"You have nothing!" Clara snarled, her voice finally losing its aristocratic polish, revealing the desperate, snarling predator hiding beneath the designer clothes and the maroon dress. "This estate is a sovereign fortress of family assets. You cannot touch me, and you certainly cannot take my grandchild!"
Eleanor stepped back toward the French doors, her mind racing as she realized that staying inside the mansion any longer meant walking directly into Clara's trap. She looked down at little Lily, who had stopped crying and was now staring up at her mother with wide, trusting blue eyes. The smart-home wall tablet near the hallway entrance began to flash a bright, pulsing amber light, signaling that the master security override had just detected an incoming outside connection attempting to bypass the estate's firewall.
"Arthur," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a quiet, deadly calm that commanded more authority than Clara's screaming. "Open the back security door right now, or I swear to God I will burn this entire legacy to the ground."

Arthur stared at his wife, his hands trembling violently as he reached slowly toward the smart-home terminal on the study wall, his fingers hovering millimeters away from the master release button.
