Chapter 1 - The Rice on the Maroon Dress

The porcelain plate shattered against Clara’s maroon bodice with a dull, wet thud, sending a cascade of white rice and neon-green peas cascading across her aged chest like a sudden, violent hail-storm. Eleanor stood frozen in the suffocating stillness of the dining room, her vibrant blue silk button-up shirt catching the harsh light of the crystal chandelier while one arm securely cradled the weeping one-year-old Lily. The lingering scent of scorched butter and caramelized onions hung heavily in the air, thick enough to choke on. Clara didn’t scream, nor did she jump from her high-backed mahogany chair; instead, she slowly raised a trembling, liver-spotted hand and brushed a stray grain of sticky white rice from her collarbone, her eyes locking onto Eleanor’s with a terrifying, glacial calm that promised absolute annihilation.

"Is that the best performance your little theatrical school could teach you, Eleanor?" Clara rasped, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly low that it seemed to freeze the very oxygen in the room.

"Shut your mouth," Eleanor breathed, her chest heaving as natural adrenaline coursed through her veins, tightening every muscle in her sleek frame. "You cross the line every single day, and I am done standing by while you poison this house with your cruelty."

Arthur stood motionless near the sideboard, his white button-up shirt stark against the dark oak panels, his face drained of all color as he looked frantically between his wife and his mother. "Eleanor, what have you done? You’ve completely lost your mind. Mother is just venting her frustration; she didn't mean to call our daughter an animal."

"She meant every single word, Arthur, and you know it," Eleanor snapped, her voice trembling with suppressed fury as Lily whimpered softly against her shoulder, burying her tear-stained face into the vibrant silk. "She treats this entire family like her personal board of directors, and I refuse to let her break our child the way she broke you."

"You have no idea what it takes to survive in this family," Clara whispered, a dark, venomous smile slowly curving the corners of her thin lips as she looked down at the mess staining her expensive designer dress. "And by the time the police arrive, you won't even have a home left to defend."

Eleanor turned sharply on her heel, ignoring the warning, and marched down the dimly lit hallway straight toward the walk-in pantry, her mind racing with a terrifying realization about the two officers currently making their way through the front gates.
