Chapter 6: The Timber Mill

The SUV turned off the paved highway onto a rough, muddy trail surrounded by towering pine trees. Ahead, the dark silhouette of the old timber mill rose against the stormy sky like a rusting iron skeleton.

Arthur parked the vehicle out of sight behind a thick cluster of trees. He turned off the headlights, plunging them into total darkness save for the flashes of lightning overhead.

""Stay in the car, Laura. Lock the doors from the inside,"" Arthur instructed gently, pulling a small radio from his glove box. ""If I'm not back in thirty minutes, press this red button. It will broadcast our location directly to the police.""

""Be careful, Grandfather,"" Laura said, her small voice trembling.

Arthur gave her a reassuring nod, pulled a flashlight and his old service revolver from the safe beneath his seat, and stepped out into the pouring rain.
