The heavy oak doors slammed shut, the metallic click of the lock reverberating through the grand dining room. Outside, rain beat against the tall stained-glass windows. Inside, silence hung like a heavy fog.
Arthur Sterling, the patriarch of the Sterling family estate, adjusted his navy suit coat. His hand remained firm on eight-year-old Laura’s shoulder. Blood and mud smudged her pale dress, but her tear-filled hazel eyes held steady.
Across the long table sat eight men in dark suits—the board of directors, long-time business partners, and family members. Every face masked varying degrees of shock and guilt.
