Chapter 5 - The Empty Seat

The morning sun filtered through the tall arched windows of the Vance estate, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished wooden floors. The dining room looked entirely different in daylight; the festive elegance of the previous evening now felt hollow, reduced to the lingering scent of expensive wine and cold wax from the half-melted candles. Clara sat at the head of the long white-clothed table, nursing a cup of black coffee. The empty chair where Arthur had sat just hours before seemed to loom larger than his physical presence ever had.

Helena entered the room quietly, leaning on an ornate silver-handled cane. She wore a simple black silk blouse instead of her usual embroidered dress, her silver hair brushed back into a neat, understated twist. She looked tired, the events of the previous night having aged her visibly. Without asking, she pulled out the chair directly adjacent to Clara rather than her usual spot at the side.

"The domestic staff has already packed Arthur’s personal belongings," Helena said softly, breaking the morning silence as she poured herself a cup of tea. "They whispered among themselves in the hallway, wondering how long before the estate goes on the market."

Clara took a slow sip of her coffee, her dark eyes fixed on the garden outside. "The estate won't be sold, Helena. Not yet. The federal court granted a temporary stay on the residential properties while we audit the charitable foundations Arthur operated."

Helena blew gently across the surface of her hot tea, watching the steam rise into the cool morning air. "You intend to keep living here, in this house of ghosts?"

"I intend to turn it into what it was always supposed to be," Clara replied firmly, turning her gaze to meet her mother-in-law's eyes. "A sanctuary for the families Arthur’s corporations displaced. The foundation funds were never his to hoard. We are going to return every penny, starting with the pension funds he diverted four years ago."

Helena let out a bitter, dry laugh. "You speak with the absolute certainty of youth, Clara. You think cleaning the ledgers washes away the shame? The Vance name is finished. The board of directors is already drafting statements distancing themselves from Arthur’s entire lineage."

"Let them," Clara said, her voice unyielding. "Names mean nothing when the character behind them is hollow. My father taught me that integrity is built in the dark when no one is watching, not under the glow of crystal chandeliers."

Before Helena could respond, a sharp knock echoed from the front foyer. Clara set her coffee cup down slowly, her intuition whispering that the storm had only just begun.
