Chapter 13 - The Confrontation

The tense atmosphere in the federal conference room became almost palpable as Marcus Vance-Cole stepped forward, his tailored suit radiating corporate intimidation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Diane Sterling didn't flinch; she simply pressed a button on her desk console, instantly locking the heavy conference room doors from the inside.

"Mr. Marcus Vance-Cole," Sterling said, her voice dripping with formal disdain. "You are currently standing in a secure federal facility without clearance, interrupting an active federal investigation. Please step back or federal marshals will assist you."

Marcus sneered, casting a venomous look at Clara and Helena. "That flash drive on your desk was retrieved from a private residence under questionable circumstances involving trespassing and property damage. My legal team will have it suppressed within ten minutes of filing a motion."

Clara stepped out from behind the table, closing the distance between herself and Marcus with measured, deliberate steps. The white collared shirt she wore was still slightly stained from the drainage tunnel, but her presence commanded the entire room.

"You can talk about suppression motions all you want, Marcus," Clara said, her voice cutting cleanly through his bluster. "You forgot one fundamental detail about Arthur’s paranoia. He didn't just keep digital backups; he recorded every face-to-face meeting you and he ever had in that underground vault."

Marcus’s confident facade flickered for a split second, a micro-expression of sheer panic flashing across his eyes before he quickly re-established his arrogant smirk. "You're bluffing. Arthur destroyed those recordings months ago."

Clara smiled faintly, reaching into her bag to pull out a small, secondary memory card that she had detached from the main filing cabinet before leaving the vault. "Arthur never trusted anyone, Marcus—least of all his favorite cousin. This memory card contains the audio and video file of you handing him the forged mortgage papers three months ago."

Sterling watched the exchange closely, picking up the secondary memory card from the table and inserting it into her terminal. Within seconds, clear high-definition audio and video began playing on the wall monitor, broadcasting Marcus’s distinct voice outlining the fraudulent syndicate takeover directly to Arthur in the subterranean vault.

Marcus turned completely pale. The ironclad confidence vanished, replaced by the cold reality that his multi-million-dollar empire was about to collapse around him.

"Take him into custody," Sterling ordered calmly, nodding toward the armed marshals waiting near the door.
