Chapter 12 - The Ultimatum

The unmarked federal sedan glided silently through the secure gates of the federal district courthouse downtown, bypassing the media vans clustered around the front entrance. Clara and Helena stepped out into the underground parking garage, escorted by two armed federal marshals who guided them directly toward a private elevator bank. The sterile, fluorescent-lit corridors of the federal building offered a stark contrast to the decaying elegance of the Vance estate.
They were led into a secure conference room where a middle-aged woman in a sharp navy suit sat reviewing a stack of financial documents. She looked up as the door opened, her sharp eyes assessing Clara and Helena with professional intensity.
"Mrs. Vance, I’m Assistant U.S. Attorney Diane Sterling," the woman introduced herself, standing up to extend a hand. "I understand you have something that completes our case against the Vance-Cole syndicate."
Clara stepped forward and placed the encrypted flash drive directly onto the center of the conference table. "This drive contains the complete ledger of offshore transfers, shell corporation titles, and signed affidavits proving that Marcus Vance-Cole orchestrated the syndicate's financial takeover using forged federal permits."
Attorney Sterling picked up the small black drive, turning it over in her palm before plugging it directly into a secure terminal on her desk. A few keystrokes later, a complex web of corporate hierarchies and transaction logs lit up the large wall-mounted monitor in the room.
"This is extraordinary," Sterling said, scrolling through the encrypted data files with visible astonishment. "With this level of verified evidence, we can issue freezing orders on every single asset Marcus controls before the stock market opens tomorrow morning."
"There is just one catch," Clara said firmly, crossing her arms over her chest.
Sterling looked up, her expression narrowing. "What kind of catch, Mrs. Vance?"
"Marcus currently holds the fraudulent mortgage deed to my family home," Clara stated without hesitation. "I want the federal court to nullify that specific transaction concurrently with the asset seizure, returning the estate to the family trust free and clear."
Before Sterling could respond, the secure conference room door was flung open without warning. A tall, imposing figure stepped into the room flanked by two private attorneys in tailored suits. It was Marcus Vance-Cole, his face twisted in a mask of absolute fury.

"Don't listen to her, Counselor," Marcus barked, stepping toward the table with an intimidating stride. "Any evidence obtained from that private vault without a warrant is legally inadmissible, and I will sue this entire department for unlawful trespass."
