Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The dial tone hummed softly against Clara’s ear as she stared unblinkingly at her husband. Arthur froze mid-reach, his hand hovering inches from the white tablecloth. His chest heaved beneath the fine wool of his tuxedo, every breath shallow and ragged. Helena remained frozen in her seat, her wrinkled hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table so tightly that her knuckles turned chalk white. The silence in the dining room grew suffocating, broken only by the distant ticking of an antique grandfather clock in the hallway.

"Who is on that line, Clara?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping into a menacing hiss that lacked its previous thunder. He tried to mask his rising panic with authority, but the tremor in his lower jaw betrayed him.

Clara lowered the phone an inch, her gaze hardening. The small drop of blood near her ear had dried into a dark streak, emphasizing the cold resolve in her dark eyes. She remembered the late nights in her father’s modest study, pouring over ledger books that Arthur had spent five years trying to burn. Those ledgers contained every fraudulent signature, every offshore shell corporation, and every illegal acquisition that built the Vance family empire.

"You know very well who is on the line, Arthur," Clara replied, her tone devoid of fear. "My father has waited a long time for this conversation. He wants to know why his life’s work was stolen, and more importantly, why you left him to take the fall for your corporate crimes."

Arthur’s face twisted into an ugly grimace. He took a slow step around the table, closing the distance between them. Helena raised a fragile hand, trying to interject, but her son ignored her completely.

"Your father is a broken man in a nursing home, Clara," Arthur sneered, stepping closer. "He doesn't remember what day of the week it is, let alone corporate restructuring. Whatever nonsense you told him on this call won't hold up for five seconds."

Clara tilted her head slightly, offering a faint, chilling smile. She didn't break eye contact as she pressed the speaker button, filling the silent room with a raspy, familiar voice that made Arthur stumble backward.

"I remember everything, Arthur," the voice rasped through the speaker. "And the federal prosecutor is listening in."

Arthur turned completely pale, his eyes darting toward the smartphone as realization struck him like a physical blow.
