Chapter 4 - The Arrest

The heavy click of the steel cuffs locking around Arthur’s wrists sounded like a gunshot in the silent dining room. He didn't struggle—years of projecting unassailable power had taught him that public humiliation was something to be managed, not fought with physical thrashing. Yet, the muscle in his jaw throbbed violently as the federal agents guided him toward the grand double doors. He cast one final, venomous glance back at Clara, who stood by the white-clothed table holding the smartphone like a shield.
"You think you’ve won, Clara," Arthur muttered through gritted teeth as he was escorted past her. "Without my signature, those accounts are frozen. You’ll starve right along with me."
Clara didn't blink. She watched him disappear into the dimly lit hallway, listening to the rhythmic clicking of his dress shoes against the parquet floor fade away. Helena remained seated at the table, staring blindly at the half-empty wine glass in front of her. The seventy-year-old matriarch looked smaller now, stripped of the formidable aura she usually projected.
"You didn't have to destroy him completely, child," Helena murmured, her voice cracking slightly as she stared at the tablecloth. "He is my son. Whatever he did, blood should have meant something."
Clara walked slowly around the table, stopping beside Helena’s chair. She placed a gentle, steady hand on the older woman’s shoulder. The contrast between Clara’s crisp white shirt and Helena’s embroidered beige dress symbolized a generational divide that could no longer be bridged by polite silences and hidden sins.
"Blood meant everything to my father, Helena, and Arthur took his life, his dignity, and his health without a second thought," Clara said quietly. "Justice isn't destruction. It’s balance."
The lead agent re-entered the dining room, stepping lightly across the broken glass from the shattered goblet. He nodded respectfully toward Clara before handing her a heavy manila envelope stamped with federal seals.
"Thank you for your cooperation, Mrs. Vance," the agent said. "The federal prosecutor needs you at the downtown office tomorrow morning to sign the final witness depositions. The assets recovered from the offshore accounts will begin liquidation immediately."
Clara accepted the envelope, feeling its substantial weight. "I will be there."

As the agents departed, leaving Clara and Helena alone in the cavernous dining room, the grandfather clock struck nine, its deep chimes signaling the end of an era.
