Chapter 10 - The Drainage Tunnel

The damp, earthy smell of the underground drainage pipe filled Clara’s senses as she pulled herself inside and slammed the heavy steel hatch shut just as heavy footsteps echoed down the metal staircase of the vault. She could hear muffled shouts of frustration from Marcus’s enforcers echoing through the concrete ceiling above. Without wasting a second, Clara began crawling forward through the dark, narrow conduit, following the faint silhouette of Helena’s beige dress ahead of her.

The concrete walls were cold and rough, scraping against Clara’s forearms through the sleeves of her white shirt, but she didn't slow down. She knew that if Marcus’s men discovered the escape hatch, they would fan out across the estate perimeter within minutes. Every second counted.

"Clara..." Helena’s voice drifted back, strained and breathless from the physical exertion. "I don't think I can crawl much further. My knees... they're giving out."

Clara pushed harder, closing the distance between them until she reached Helena’s side in a wider junction of the pipe where they could crouch slightly. She grabbed Helena’s hands, which were smudged with dust and dirt, and offered words of encouragement.

"You're doing amazing, Helena. Just a little further," Clara said, her voice steady and reassuring. "The exit leads to the old greenhouse near the property line. From there, we can reach the main road before anyone intercepts us."

Helena leaned against the damp concrete wall, closing her eyes for a brief moment to catch her breath. Her diamond necklace was tucked safely beneath her black silk blouse, hidden from the dirt and grime. She looked at Clara with a new, profound respect that had been entirely absent when they first sat down for dinner twenty-four hours ago.

"I misjudged you, Clara," Helena whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "When Arthur brought you into this family, I thought you were just another socialite looking for a wealthy name. I never realized you possessed a spine of iron."

Clara offered a faint, tired smile. "Survival demands things we didn't know we had inside us, Helena. Now, let’s keep moving before they find the exit vent."

They resumed their crawl, navigating the winding concrete artery until a faint sliver of natural daylight appeared ahead. As they drew closer, the sound of passing cars on the public highway grew louder, signaling that freedom—and safety—was finally within reach.

Clara pushed open the rusted iron grating at the end of the pipe, slipping out into the overgrown foliage of the abandoned greenhouse, and immediately pulled Helena out behind her into the crisp afternoon air.
