Chapter 1 - The Broken Glass

The crystal chandelier above the grand dining table cast a cold, fractured light across the pristine white linen. Arthur Vance stood up so abruptly that his heavy mahogany chair scraped loudly against the polished parquet floor. His black tuxedo jacket was buttoned tightly, framing a physique that radiated suppressed fury. Across the table sat Clara, his thirty-year-old wife, her dark hair tied back in a severe, elegant knot, matching her crisp white collared shirt. Beside them, seventy-year-old Helena Vance sat upright in her embroidered beige dress, her diamond necklace catching the harsh light. Arthur slammed his palm down onto the table so violently that the silver cutlery jumped and red wine sloshed over the rim of a crystal glass.

"You think you can outsmart me, Clara?" Arthur yelled, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the estate. "You think a quiet little phone call is going to dismantle everything I built?"

Clara didn’t flinch, though a flying shard of glass from a shattered water goblet grazed the side of her face. A small trace of crimson blood appeared near her ear, a stark contrast to her pale skin. She reached up slowly, her fingers brushing the warm liquid, and looked down calmly at her fingertips.

"You shouldn't have done that, Arthur," Clara said softly, her voice barely a whisper above the ringing silence of the room.

Helena leaned forward across the table, her diamond necklace clicking against the edge of the mahogany. Her eyes were sharp, narrowing as she stared at her son with a mixture of disappointment and sudden dread.

"Who were you calling, Arthur?" Helena asked urgently, her voice cutting through the heavy tension like a knife.

Arthur’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. He shouted angrily, his veins bulging at his temples, and aggressively reached across the table to grab a smartphone that lay beside Clara’s plate.

"Put the phone down!" Arthur screamed sharply, his hand lunging forward with terrifying speed.

Clara reacted with practiced agility, snatching the device away from his grasp. She pressed it tightly against her ear, a single crystal tear running down her cheek as she stared intensely into Arthur's panic-stricken eyes.

"Dad..." Clara whispered into the speaker, her voice breaking.

The screen illuminated her face, showing an incoming call from a number that Arthur thought he had erased forever.
