Chapter 3 - The Federal Wire

The tinny sound of the elderly voice echoing from the smartphone paralyzed the entire room. Arthur’s mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. His carefully constructed world, built on decades of deceit, intimidation, and financial manipulation, was crumbling in real-time. Helena gasped, pressing a trembling hand to her diamond necklace as if it could shield her from the impending scandal.

"You recorded it," Arthur whispered, the reality finally sinking into his consciousness. He looked at Clara not with anger now, but with a desperate, pathetic pleading. "Clara, please. Think about what this means. If the federal agents move in, everything we own—the estate, the foundations, our entire legacy—will be seized within twenty-four hours."

Clara stood up slowly, her crisp white shirt catching the light of the chandelier. She looked down at her husband with an expression of profound pity. She remembered the day she married him, believing he was a visionary businessman who shared her philanthropic values. It had taken her three agonizing years to uncover the truth: Arthur hadn't just ruined her father; he had systematically destroyed every obstacle in his path using extortion and financial ruin.

"You should have thought about the legacy before you framed an innocent man, Arthur," Clara said, her voice steady and resonant. "The federal agents didn't just listen to this call. They have been monitoring this IP address since this morning."

Before Arthur could lunge for the phone again, the heavy oak double doors of the formal dining room burst open with a deafening crash. Three men in dark suits stepped into the warm candlelight, their badges gleaming coldly in the austere environment. The lead agent, a tall man with piercing gray eyes and a solemn expression, surveyed the scene with practiced calm.

"Arthur Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice echoing authoritatively across the polished floors. "Step away from the table. Put your hands where we can see them."

Arthur stood frozen, his eyes darting toward the French doors leading to the garden as if calculating a desperate escape route. Helena slumped back into her chair, closing her eyes as defeat washed over her aristocratic features.

"This is a mistake," Arthur snarled, his voice rising in panic as the agents closed in around him. "I demand to speak with my legal counsel before anyone moves an inch!"

The lead agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "Your counsel can meet you at the federal district courthouse, Mr. Vance. You are under arrest for securities fraud, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice."
