Chapter 7: Rebuilding Blocks

Autumn in Oakridge turned the hills into a vibrant canvas of crimson and gold. The crisp air carried the scent of woodsmoke and fallen leaves, giving the small town a cozy, timeless feel.
Saturday arrived, bringing with it the scheduled meeting. Elena sat on a wooden bench at the edge of the town park, holding a warm cup of coffee. A few yards away, Leo was happily playing in a sandbox, digging with a small yellow plastic shovel.
A black sedan pulled up near the park entrance. Daniel stepped out, dressed simply in jeans and a dark jacket—a stark departure from his usual tailored suits. He looked older, tired, but there was a newfound humility in the way he moved.
He walked over slowly, keeping a respectful distance. ""Hi, Elena.""
""Hi, Daniel,"" she said, giving him a small, welcoming nod. ""He’s over there.""
Daniel turned his gaze toward the sandbox. When he saw Leo, his face softened completely, a mix of profound grief and sudden joy washing over his features. He walked over slowly and knelt in the woodchips near the edge of the box.
""Hey buddy,"" Daniel whispered softly.
Leo looked up, his big hazel eyes blinking in recognition. ""Daddy!"" he babbled, dropping his shovel and waddling over with clumsy toddler enthusiasm.

Daniel caught him, pulling him into a tight embrace, burying his face in the child’s soft hair. Elena watched from the bench, feeling no lingering anger—only a quiet hope that Daniel would fulfill his promises for Leo's sake.
While Daniel built a crude sandcastle with Leo, Elena reflected on her own journey. Healing hadn't come overnight, nor was it complete. It came in small, quiet moments: the smell of pine in the morning, the genuine kindness of neighbors like Clara, and the knowledge that she had taken control of her own destiny.
