Chapter 10: Bridge Building

A year after Elena walked out of the mansion, Daniel arrived in Oakridge for Leo’s second birthday party.

The gathering was small, held in the sunlit backyard of Elena’s cottage. Clara was there with a homemade peach cobbler, Marcus had carved a beautiful wooden toy train for Leo, and a few local families from the playgroup were chatting cheerfully around the picnic table.

Daniel stood near the edge of the yard, watching Leo happily push his new wooden train through the grass. He looked healthier now—the frantic, desperate edge he once possessed was gone, replaced by a quiet, grounded humility.

Elena walked over, handing him a glass of lemonade. ""He loves the train,"" she said softly.

""Marcus made it, right?"" Daniel asked, looking over at the carpenter, who was busy helping another child build a cardboard castle. ""He seems like a good man.""

""He is,"" Elena agreed simply. ""A very good man.""

Daniel took a slow sip of his drink, staring at the lake in the distance. ""I wanted to tell you... I settled the rest of the corporate restructuring last week. I paid back the misallocated funds, resigned from the main board, and took over a smaller, local advisory branch.""

Elena turned to look at him, genuine respect in her eyes. ""That took courage, Daniel.""

""It took losing what mattered most to realize what was worth saving,"" he replied, looking her in the eyes. ""I know I can never undo the past, Elena. But I want you to know... I’m truly glad you’re happy here. You built something beautiful out of the wreckage I caused.""

""We both rebuilt, Daniel,"" Elena said gently. ""For Leo.""
