Chapter 3: Unraveling Threads

Back in the city, the atmosphere inside Daniel’s modern estate was suffocating. The yellow envelope sat on the dark oak dining table, its contents spread out like evidence in a courtroom trial.
Sophia paced back and forth across the rug, her heels clicking angrily. ""She targeted us, Daniel! She used her professional skills to spy on us! You need to call your lawyers. You need to file for full custody of Leo immediately!""
Daniel sat motionless, his face buried in his hands. ""Custody? Sophia, look at these documents."" He motioned toward the papers spread across the wood. ""She didn't just find out about us. She tracked the offshore accounts I set up for your shell corporation. She has paper trails, wire transfers, dates, signatures. If this goes to a judge, I don't just lose my family—I lose my firm. I go to prison.""
Sophia stopped pacing, her expression hardening. ""She wouldn't do that. She loved you.""
""She loved the man she thought I was,"" Daniel said, finally looking up. His eyes were red-rimmed, stripped of the confidence he usually wore like armor. ""I lied to her every single day. I thought I was being clever, hiding things behind complex corporate structures. I forgot who she was before she gave up her career for our son. She’s the best forensic auditor in the state.""
Sophia snapped her handbag shut. ""Well, I’m not going to sit here and wait for the state prosecutor to knock on my door. Fix this, Daniel. Or I will."" She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving him alone in the quiet house.

Daniel looked down at a photo resting near the edge of the table. It wasn't one of the surveillance shots Elena had gathered. It was an old 4x6 print from three years ago—Elena holding newborn Leo, her face radiant with exhausted joy, looking at Daniel as if he held the universe.
A heavy lump formed in his throat. For the first time, the true cost of his choices hit him. He hadn't just lost a partner; he had destroyed the sanctuary he took for granted.
