Chapter 11: Reflections

That night, after the guests had departed and Daniel had returned to his inn, Elena sat on her porch swing. The gentle creak of the wooden chains rhythmically matched the soft chirping of crickets in the grass.
Leo was sound asleep, tired out from a full day of birthday cake and play.
Marcus walked up the porch steps, carrying a small box of tools he had used to set up the outdoor decorations. ""All packed up in the shed,"" he said, wiping his hands on a rag.
""Thank you, Marcus. For everything today,"" Elena said, motioning for him to sit.
He sat down on the bench across from her, leaning back against the wooden railing. ""Your ex-husband... he seems like he's trying.""
""He is,"" Elena said thoughtfully. ""It took a long time, but he’s finally taking responsibility for his life. I’m glad Leo gets to have his father present.""
Marcus nodded slowly, his expression warm and understanding. ""It takes a very strong person to forgive someone without letting them break your boundaries.""
Elena smiled, looking out at the calm moonlit water. ""Forgiveness isn't about letting them back into your life the same way, Marcus. It's just letting go of the expectation that the past could have been different.""
May you like
Marcus reached out, placing his warm, rough hand gently over hers on the armrest. ""Well, looking at you now, I'd say the present is right where it needs to be.""
Elena felt a warm, quiet flutter in her heart—a feeling she hadn't experienced in years. She didn't pull her hand away.
