Life in Oakridge moved at a slow, deliberate pace. Within two weeks, Elena had enrolled Leo in a local playgroup and accepted a part-time job handling the books for a community cooperative market. The work was simple compared to the high-stakes corporate audits she used to run, but it brought a quiet satisfaction.
One rainy afternoon, while Leo was taking a nap at the cottage under the watchful eye of a trusted local babysitter, Elena met with Sarah, a highly respected family law attorney in a nearby town.
Sarah reviewed the binder of documents Elena had meticulously organized. Page by page, Sarah’s eyebrows raised in quiet astonishment.
""This is incredible work, Elena,"" Sarah said, closing the binder with a firm thud. ""Most clients come to me with suspicions and rumors. You’ve handed me a ironclad audit. Financially, you hold all the leverage. You could push for maximum alimony, full child support, and potentially trigger an investigation into his business practices.""
Elena looked out the window at the rain falling on the quiet main street. ""I didn't gather these numbers to ruin him, Sarah.""
Sarah paused, looking over her glasses. ""Then why did you do it?""
""I gathered them because I needed to know the truth,"" Elena said softly. ""When someone lies to you for a long time, you start doubting your own sanity. You doubt your memory, your instincts, your perception of reality. I needed to see the facts on paper to confirm that I wasn't crazy.""

Sarah smiled warmly, nodding slowly. ""That is a rare perspective, Elena. And it’s the healthiest one for your son. We will file tomorrow, quietly and professionally.""
