Chapter 5: Confrontation

A month later, the peaceful routine Elena had built was interrupted.
It was late afternoon, and Elena was finishing her shift at the cooperative market, placing fresh jars of local honey onto the wooden shelves. The bell above the shop door chimed, admitting a damp chill from the autumn air outside.
Elena turned around and froze. Standing by the door, wearing an expensive trench coat that looked completely out of place in the rustic store, was Sophia.
""Elena,"" Sophia said, her voice dropping the artificial warmth it used to carry.
Elena kept her posture calm, keeping the counter between them. ""Sophia. You shouldn't be here.""
""I drove three hours to find you,"" Sophia said, walking down the aisle, her sharp heels clicking against the worn wooden floorboards. ""You've ruined Daniel. He’s a shell of himself. His business partners are asking questions because of the formal legal notices your lawyer sent. You're destroying everything he built.""
Elena listened quietly, her face an unreadable mask. ""Daniel destroyed what he built when he chose to lie, Sophia. I simply documented the choices he made.""
""You think you're so morally superior, don't you?"" Sophia spat, her frustration bubbling over. ""You walked away with your head held high, making everyone think you're the victim. But you're calculating. You planned this!""
""I protected my son,"" Elena corrected her, her voice cool and steady, devoid of anger. ""And I protected myself. You came here expecting to find an angry, broken woman, Sophia. But I'm not angry anymore. Anger takes energy, and I need mine for Leo.""
Sophia opened her mouth to speak, but the sheer lack of reaction from Elena seemed to strip the words right out of her. Elena didn't shout; she didn't throw accusations. She simply stood there, grounded and completely unshakeable.

""If you have legal concerns,"" Elena added quietly, ""have Daniel’s lawyer contact Sarah. Otherwise, please leave the store.""
Sophia stared at her for a long, silent moment, realizing that her presence no longer held any power over Elena. Without another word, she turned and walked out, the bell chiming softly behind her.
