Chapter 13: Full Circle

A few weeks later, Elena had cause to return to the city for the final closing of her old estate—the glass-and-steel mansion she had left behind two years ago. The house had finally been sold to a new family.
She walked through the grand front doors one last time to sign the final transfer paperwork alongside Daniel.
The foyer, once so cold and intimidating, now seemed remarkably ordinary. The high glass walls and polished marble floors no longer felt like a prison or a grand palace. They were just stone and glass.
""Ready?"" Daniel asked gently, holding the closing folder.
""Ready,"" Elena said.
They signed the papers together, handing them to the escrow officer. With a simple handshake, the last physical tie to her former life was officially severed.
As they walked out to the driveway, Daniel stopped by her car. ""Are you heading straight back to Oakridge?""
""Yes,"" Elena smiled, checking her watch. ""Marcus is taking Leo to the pumpkin patch this afternoon, and I promised I’d meet them there.""
Daniel smiled sincerely, nodding. ""He’s a good kid, Elena. He’s happy, confident, and grounded. That’s all thanks to you.""
""It’s thanks to all of us working together for him,"" Elena corrected him gently. ""Take care of yourself, Daniel.""

""You too, Elena,"" he said softly, watching her get into her car.
As she drove away from the city, Elena didn't feel the sudden rush of escape she had felt two years ago. She simply felt the calm, steady joy of going home.
