Chapter 6: The Mirror

Sophia’s visit, rather than unsettling Elena, brought a surprising sense of closure. It highlighted how far she had come from the quiet, confused woman who had walked out of the mansion four weeks ago.

That night, Daniel called. This time, Elena answered.

""Elena?"" Daniel’s voice sounded tired, stripped of its usual polish. ""Thank you for taking my call.""

""Hello, Daniel. How are you?"" she asked, her tone polite but distant.

""I’m... not good,"" he admitted after a long pause. ""Sophia told me she went to see you. I want you to know I didn't send her. I was furious when I found out.""

""It doesn't matter, Daniel,"" Elena said softly, sitting by her kitchen window. ""She didn't change anything.""

""Elena... I hired a new lawyer today. Not to fight you,"" he added quickly. ""I told him to accept your terms. The custody arrangement, the settlement... everything your attorney drafted. I won't fight you in court.""

Elena was silent for a moment, genuinely surprised. ""Why?""

""Because I looked at those documents again,"" Daniel said, his voice cracking slightly. ""Not the bank records. The picture. The picture of you and Leo from the day he was born. I realized that for three years, I was chasing things that didn't matter—status, money, validation—and I sacrificed the only real thing I had. Fighting you now would just be another attempt to save my pride. I want to try to be a father Leo can actually respect someday.""

Elena closed her eyes, feeling a quiet sense of relief. A bitter custody battle would have drained everyone, especially Leo.

""Thank you, Daniel,"" she said, her voice sincere. ""That is the first step.""

""Can I see him?"" Daniel asked, hesitation clear in his tone. ""Under whatever supervision you want. I just want to see my son.""

""Yes,"" Elena replied softly. ""Next weekend. We can meet at the park in town.""
