Chapter 9: Whispers in the Hallway

The next morning broke with a heavy, grey fog that clung to the windows of the Vance estate like a shroud. Leo was unusually quiet at the breakfast table, pushing his scrambled eggs around his plate with a yellow plastic fork without taking a single bite.
Elena stood nearby, watching the boy with deep concern. She poured Julian a fresh cup of coffee, her movements hesitant. "He heard us talking last night, Mr. Vance," she whispered softly, keeping her voice low so Leo wouldn't hear. "He heard you and Marcus talking about courts and strangers. He’s terrified."
Julian felt a sharp pang of guilt pierce his chest. He set his coffee cup down, stood up from the table, and walked over to kneel beside his son’s chair.
"Hey, buddy," Julian said softly, offering a warm, reassuring smile. "You didn't touch your breakfast. Is everything okay?"
Leo looked up, his large blue eyes swimming with unshed tears. He dropped his fork and threw his arms around Julian’s neck, burying his face in his shoulder just as he had done in the hallway days before. "Are they going to take me away, Daddy? Are we going to have to leave this house?"
Julian wrapped his arms tightly around the boy, holding him close, feeling the fragile heartbeat against his own ribs. "Never, Leo. Look at me. I promise you, with every fiber of my being, nobody is ever taking you away from this home. You are my boy, forever and always."
Leo sniffled, slowly pulling back to wipe his eyes with the sleeve of his yellow t-shirt. "Even if the man who looks like me comes back?"
Julian’s jaw tightened momentarily before he softened his expression for his son’s sake. "Especially then. Grown-ups sometimes make silly arguments, but nothing changes the fact that I am your father, and I love you more than anything in the world."
Elena watched the exchange from across the kitchen, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. She knew Julian’s promise came from a place of fierce, unconditional love, but she also knew the legal storm brewing outside was gathering strength by the hour.
Later that afternoon, while Leo was safely occupied with his art tutor, Julian received a priority text message from his private investigator in Geneva: Found the money trail. The funding for Arthur Sterling didn't come from Clara. It came from a rival corporate conglomerate attempting a hostile takeover of Vance Global.

The puzzle pieces suddenly snapped together with terrifying clarity. This wasn't just a bitter family feud; it was a weaponized corporate conspiracy designed to break Julian psychologically so he would relinquish control of his empire. And Leo was the collateral damage.
