Chapter 2: Echoes in the Empty Hall

The heavy oak front door slammed shut behind Clara, the sound reverberating through the hollow expanse of the Vance mansion like a gunshot. Julian stood motionless in the center of the foyer, his raised finger slowly curling into a tight fist at his side. The lingering scent of Clara’s expensive French perfume hung heavily in the air, a sickening reminder of the corporate and social merger that had long ago replaced genuine affection.
Leo’s crying had subsided into pathetic, rhythmic hiccups. Elena knelt beside the boy, using the corner of her white apron to gently wipe away the salt tracks staining his flushed cheeks. "It’s going to be alright, sweetheart," she whispered, her voice thick with maternal concern. "Your father is right here. Nobody is taking you anywhere."
Julian exhaled a long, shaky breath, the residual adrenaline leaving him dizzy and cold. He crouched down beside his son, forcing his features into a mask of calm reassurance that he was far from feeling. He gently pulled Leo away from Elena’s apron, taking the boy’s small, damp hands in his own.
"Leo, look at me," Julian said softly, his voice steady despite the internal tempest. "Listen to me very carefully. Nothing is going to change. You live here with me, and Elena, and we are safe. Do you understand?"
Leo sniffled, his wide, tear-filled blue eyes searching his father’s face for any sign of doubt. "She... she showed you the man on the phone, Daddy. The man who looks like me. Is he my real dad?"
Julian felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, as if a physical blade had twisted between his ribs. The digital photograph Clara had brandished on her screen wasn't just a threat; it was a digital ghost. It was an image of Arthur Sterling, a brilliant geneticist and Julian’s former business partner who had vanished under mysterious circumstances five years ago—the exact year of Leo’s birth. The uncanny resemblance between Arthur and the young boy was a secret Julian had buried beneath millions of dollars in hush money and ironclad non-disclosure agreements.
"Don't ever listen to things that aren't true, Leo," Julian said, his voice hardening with defensive resolve. "You are my son. End of story."

Elena cast a worried, knowing glance toward Julian, her eyes communicating a silent warning. The secret was out of the box now. Clara had found the digital Pandora’s box, and closing it again would require more than just shouting matches in the hallway.
