Chapter 4: Morning Light and Shadows

The pale morning sun filtered through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom, casting geometric patterns across the empty, unmade king-sized bed. Clara Vance had not returned to the estate last night, choosing instead to operationalize her next move from her penthouse suite downtown.

Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the manicured lawns of his estate where gardeners in green overalls moved in synchronized silence. His phone buzzed violently against the wooden sill, vibrating with an incoming encrypted call. He swiped the screen without hesitation.

"Vance," he barked into the receiver.

"Good morning, Julian," Clara’s voice purred through the speaker, devoid of sleepiness, sharp and confident. "I trust you slept well? Or did the ghosts of your past keep you tossing and turning?"

"Cut the theatrics, Clara. What do you want? Name your price, and let's get this over with without dragging Leo through the mud."

A cold, mirthless laugh echoed on the other end of the line. "Money? Julian, you still think every problem can be solved with a wire transfer. I don't want your money anymore. I want full custody. I want the estate, I want the controlling shares of the holding company, and most importantly, I want you to sit quietly in the corner while I reclaim my life."

Julian gripped the phone so hard his knuckles turned white, the plastic casing groaning under the pressure. "You are using a child as a weapon. Arthur doesn't even want him; he signed away all parental rights five years ago in exchange for millions. You know that as well as I do."

"Things change, darling," Clara replied smoothly. "Arthur has grown a conscience—or perhaps just a severe lack of funds. He’s back in town, and he’s quite eager to meet the boy he fathered. A court-ordered DNA test will take all of five minutes, and your precious reputation will crumble into dust."

"If you bring Arthur anywhere near my son, I will ruin you," Julian whispered, his voice trembling with terrifying intensity. "I will strip away every cent, every title, every asset you possess. You will walk out of that courtroom with nothing but the clothes on your back."

"Try it," Clara challenged. "The paperwork is already filed. Expect the process server by noon."

The line went dead with a sharp click. Julian lowered the phone slowly, the reality of the impending war crashing over him. He wasn't just fighting for custody anymore; he was fighting for his entire existence.

Downstairs, the faint sound of laughter drifted up from the kitchen. Elena was making pancakes for Leo, trying to maintain a semblance of normal life for a boy whose world was about to implode. Julian closed his eyes, took a deep, centering breath, and walked out of the bedroom to face the day.
