Chapter 7: The Alliance of Convenience

The neon lights of the upscale downtown hotel bar cast a bruised violet glow over the corner booth where Clara Vance sat swirling a martini. Across from her, Arthur Sterling slid into the plush leather seat, shaking the damp chill of the autumn drizzle from his trench coat.

"You were supposed to wait for my signal, Arthur," Clara said, her voice laced with sharp irritation as she set her glass down. "Showing up at the estate like a wrecking ball gives Julian time to prepare his legal defenses."

Arthur signaled the bartender with a subtle wave before looking back at his former lover. "Julian is a control freak, Clara. If we give him time to prepare, he’ll bury us in injunctions and offshore maneuvers. By hitting him directly, I tested his psychological armor. He’s cracking. The great Julian Vance is losing his grip."

"Don't underestimate him," Clara warned, leaning forward, the diamonds on her neck catching the dim light. "Julian built that empire on ruthlessness. If he realizes he can't win legally, he will find another way to neutralize us."

"Neutralize us how? Have me hit by a car?" Arthur chuckled darkly. "This isn't a mob movie, Clara. This is a family law dispute backed by irrefutable DNA evidence. A judge will grant visitation rights within weeks, and once I have access to the boy, the leverage shifts entirely to us."

"And what about my share of the holding company?" Clara demanded, her eyes narrowing. "We had an agreement, Arthur. When we flip this custody battle, the primary trust fund gets restructured under my sole management."

Arthur’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, calculating look that matched her own. "Your share is secure, Clara. Just make sure your public relations team is ready to leak the paternity documents the moment Marcus files his first blocking motion. We need public opinion on our side before Julian can spin his own narrative about a stable, loving household."

They clinked their glasses together in a silent, cynical toast—an alliance born of greed and vengeance, utterly unconcerned with the collateral damage currently sleeping in a yellow t-shirt three miles away.
