Chapter 6: The Confrontation in the Sunroom

The confrontation in the foyer threatened to spill over into chaos when a small, high-pitched voice echoed from the archway leading to the sunroom.
"Elena? Who is at the door? Are we getting a package?"
Leo stood in the doorway, holding a yellow crayon in one hand and a half-finished coloring book in the other. He stopped dead in his tracks as his large blue eyes landed on the stranger standing in the hallway. The resemblance was so striking, so mathematically precise, that it felt like looking through a time portal. Arthur looked at Leo, and for the first time, the calm, calculated facade cracked. A tremor of raw, human emotion flickered across Arthur’s face.
Julian’s heart skipped a beat. He lunged forward, placing himself squarely between Arthur and the boy, blocking the line of sight. "Leo, go back to the sunroom right now. Go play with your toys."
"Who is that man, Daddy?" Leo asked, tilting his head with innocent curiosity, completely unaware of the seismic forces colliding around him. "He looks... he looks like the picture Clara showed me on her phone yesterday."
Julian cursed internally. Clara hadn't just shown the photo to him; she had shown it to the boy too. The psychological warfare had already begun, infiltrating the pure sanctuary of childhood.
Arthur stepped to the side, trying to catch another glimpse of the boy. "Julian, don't do this. Hiding him won't change the genetics. He’s going to find out the truth sooner or later. It’s far better he hears it from the source than from a bitter ex-wife in a courtroom."
"You signed away your right to call him your son the moment you took my check and boarded a plane to Europe!" Julian snarled, his voice rising, forgetting the restraint he had tried so hard to maintain. "You abandoned him before he took his first breath. You don't get to waltz back in now that it’s convenient for your conscience!"
Elena quietly stepped up behind Leo, gently placing her hands on the boy’s shoulders and turning him away from the harrowing scene. "Come on, Leo, let’s go finish your drawing in the kitchen. I’ll make you some hot chocolate with extra marshmallows."
As Elena led the confused boy away, the heavy silence returned to the hallway, broken only by the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.
Marcus stepped forward, lowering his voice into a pragmatic, business-like tone. "Mr. Sterling, you are playing a very dangerous game. If you force this to trial, we will dig up every questionable financial transaction from your past research labs. We will destroy your professional reputation down to the studs. Is a child you never wanted really worth total ruin?"
Arthur slowly turned his piercing gaze toward Marcus, a cold smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You think I care about reputation, counselor? I have nothing left to lose. But Julian has everything to lose. Clara holds the smoking gun, and I hold the trigger. See you in court."

With that, Arthur turned on his heel, opened the heavy oak door himself, and walked out into the crisp afternoon air, leaving a trail of destructive uncertainty in his wake.
