Chapter 8: Midnight Counsel

Back at the Vance estate, the midnight oil burned once again in Julian’s private study. The heavy mahogany desk was now littered with legal briefs, financial audits, and confidential background checks on Arthur Sterling’s recent activities abroad.
Marcus paced the Persian rug, holding a lukewarm cup of coffee, his face etched with deep fatigue. "The situation is worse than I thought, Julian. Arthur isn't acting alone. Our informants in Geneva confirmed that his research firm received a massive injection of anonymous capital three months ago. Someone is funding his return. Someone with deep pockets."
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, rubbing his temples where a persistent migraine throbbed behind his eyes. "Clara. She must have funneled money to him through a shell corporation before we locked down her secondary accounts."
"It’s entirely possible," Marcus agreed, stopping his pacing to lean against the edge of the desk. "Which means this isn't just a bitter divorce spat anymore. It’s a coordinated corporate and legal assault designed to strip you of your majority voting shares in Vance Global by leveraging Leo’s custody."
Julian stared blankly at the wall, his mind racing through endless scenarios. For five years, he had protected Leo from the harsh realities of the world, providing him with a loving home, stability, and absolute devotion. The biological technicality of DNA felt like a cruel cosmic joke designed to tear down everything he had built.
"What are our options, Marcus?" Julian asked, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Can we stall the custody hearing?"
"We can file for a psychological evaluation of the child to prove that sudden disruption would cause severe trauma," Marcus said carefully. "It buys us time—maybe a few months. But eventually, a judge is going to order a genetic test. And when that happens..." Marcus trailed off, leaving the inevitable conclusion hanging heavily in the air.
"I won't let them take him," Julian said quietly, but the intensity behind the words was absolute. "I don't care about the shares. I don't care about the estate or the corporate empire. If I lose Leo, I lose everything that matters."
"Then we fight dirty," Marcus said firmly. "We find the source of that anonymous funding in Geneva. If we can prove conspiracy and extortion, we can freeze Arthur’s assets before he even steps foot in a courtroom."

Julian nodded slowly. The gloves were off. The civilized veneer of corporate litigation had dissolved into total war, and he would burn every bridge necessary to keep his family intact.
