Chapter 9 - The Maintenance Shaft

Elena didn't waste another second talking to the man who had sold their child. She scrambled away from the door, dragging her shivering body toward the massive server rack humming loudly in the center of the freezing vault.
Using the heavy titanium pry bar Julian had provided, she jammed the flat edge into the seams of the lower intake vent. Her muscles screamed in protest, aching from the cold and the physical struggle upstairs, but adrenaline fueled every fiber of her being. With a sharp wrench, the metal grate popped free, clattering noisily against the grated floor.
A rush of damp, stagnant air billowed out from the dark shaft beyond. Without a second thought, Elena squeezed her shoulders through the narrow opening, sliding feet-first into the murky, echoing pipe.
The drop was steep and slick with moss. She slid downward for several yards, scraping her bare knees against the concrete interior before landing hard in a shallow pool of runoff water that soaked the hem of her ruined black dress.
The maintenance shaft stretched out in both directions, illuminated intermittently by flickering overhead emergency bulbs. To her left, the pipe sloped upward toward the hotel foundations; to her right, it sloped down toward the industrial harborfront.
She could hear the distant, heavy thrum of ship engines vibrating through the concrete walls—a low, mechanical heartbeat signaling that time was running out.
Elena sprinted down the right-hand tunnel, her bare feet splashing loudly in the runoff water. The diamond earrings she still wore clipped against her jawline with every pounding step, a jarring reminder of the elite world she had left behind.
After ten minutes of breathless running, the tunnel opened up into a massive underground cistern where several large drainage pipes converged. Standing near a rusted iron ladder that led up to a street-level manhole cover was a lone figure in a dark trench coat.
Elena froze in the shadows behind a concrete support pillar, her breath coming in ragged gasps.

The figure turned slowly, revealing not a guard, but a local harbor police detective whom Elena had met twice at charity functions.
